Creando un equipo de misioneros laicos
En 1994, el P. Patrick Keyes y yo comenzamos a predicar misiones bilingües en varios pueblos de Colorado. En esas misiones, a menudo traíamos a algunos de los jóvenes de la comunidad de Casa San Alfonso para participar en las misiones. Ayudaron con las liturgias de la misión, ofrecieron servicio cuidado de niños mientras los padres participaban en la misión. Desarrollaron servicios y clases para los niños, y en varias de las misiones incluimos un día de retiro para jóvenes. Nuestro equipo laico organizó las jornadas de la juventud. Ofrecimos una misión en dos parroquias en 1994 y tres en 1995.
Reconocimos el beneficio de lo que ofrecieron los misioneros laicos a medida que recibimos más invitaciones de parroquias para las misiones bilingües. En cada misión llevamos algunos jóvenes que generosamente se entregaron a la misión. Se tomaron una semana libre en su trabajo o vinieron durante un descanso de la escuela para participar en las misiones. En 1996, aceptamos solicitudes de varias parroquias para misiones y necesitábamos un equipo de voluntarios laicos para pasar seis meses en misiones. Reclutamos a dos misioneros laicos de México y a un inmigrante salvadoreño que estaba considerando una vocación a la vida religiosa. La formación de nuestro equipo misionero bilingüe comenzó reuniéndonos durante una semana para conocernos unos a otros. No teníamos un programa de formación. Reunimos a dos sacerdotes redentoristas y los tres voluntarios laicos. La formación misionera tuvo lugar cuando los voluntarios experimentaron su primera misión.
Nuestros voluntarios laicos tenían experiencia en retiros, educación religiosa, participación en expresión religiosa popular, compromiso con jóvenes y niños. La primera semana juntos y la primera misión conocieron nuestro carisma, historia e intención Redentorista de construir nuestro equipo como comunidad. La formación misionera laica no se trataba de métodos y formato de la misión. Se trataba de honrar la fe de los pobres que encontraríamos. Comenzamos llamando la atención a la fe de los migrantes, sus valores, esperanzas y sueños. Necesitamos honrar la fe de los pobres.
Fue reconfortante leer casi veinte años después, que el Papa Francisco dijera en la Alegría del Evangelio: “La inmensa mayoría de los pobres tiene una especial apertura a la fe; necesitan a Dios y no podemos dejar de ofrecerles su amistad, su bendición, su Palabra, la celebración de los Sacramentos y la propuesta de un camino de crecimiento y de maduración en la fe.” (EG. 200) Enseñamos a nuestros misioneros a honrar la fe de los pobres. Nuestra misión era invitar a los participantes de habla inglesa en nuestras misiones a honrar la fe de los migrantes, y a que nuestros participantes de habla español reconocieran la historia de conversión en su propia historia y cultura. HONRAR la fe de los pobres es esencial para crear experiencias de evangelización en las comunidades de migrantes.

Creating a team of lay missionaries
In 1994, Fr. Patrick Keyes and I began preaching bilingual missions in several towns in Colorado. On those missions, we often brought some of the young people from the Casa San Alfonso community to participate in the missions. They helped with the liturgies of the mission, offered babysitting and childcare while parents participated in the mission. They developed services and classes for the children, and on several of the missions we included having a retreat day for youth. Our lay team organized the youth days. We offered one mission in two parishes in 1994 and three in 1995
We recognized the benefit of what the lay missionaries offered as we received more invitations from parishes for the bilingual missions. On each mission we took a few young people who generously gave of themselves to the mission. They took a week off from their work or came while on a break from school to participate in the missions. In 1996, we accepted requests from several parishes for missions and needed a team of lay volunteers to spend six months on missions. We recruited two lay missionaries from Mexico and a Salvadoran immigrant who was considering a vocation to religious life. Formation of our bilingual mission team began by coming together for a week to get to know each other. We did not have a program of formation. We brought together two Redemptorist priests and three lay volunteers. Mission formation took place as the volunteers experienced their first mission.
Our lay volunteers had experience in retreats, religious education, participation in popular religious expression, engagement with youth and children. The first week together and the first mission they were introduced to our Redemptorist charism, history and intention to build our team as a community. The lay missionary training was not about methods and the format of the mission. It was about honoring the faith of the poor whom we would meet. We began with calling attention to the faith of migrants, their values, hopes and dreams. We need to honor the faith of the poor.
It was refreshing to read nearly twenty years later, Pope Francis saying in the Joy of the Gospel, “The great majority of the poor have a special openness to the faith; they need God and we must not fail to offer them his friendship, his blessing, his word, the celebration of the sacraments and a journey of growth and maturity in the faith.” (EG. 200) We taught our missionaries to honor the faith of the poor. Our mission was to invite the English-speaking participants at our missions to honor the faith of migrants, and for our Spanish-speaking participants to recognize the story of conversion in their own cultural history. To HONOR the faith of the poor is essential to creating experiences of evangelization in migrant communities.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
