Continuando con el tema: Cambio del Enfoque
Para continuar con el tema de cambiar el enfoque sobre la inmigración, consideremos “El Gran Mandamiento”. Moisés lo da en Deuteronomio y es la respuesta de un intérprete de la ley a la pregunta de Jesús: “¿Qué está escrito en la Ley?”. Jesús dijo en Mateo 22:37-39: “Amarás al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma y con toda tu mente. Este es el primer mandamiento. El segundo es semejante: Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo”.
Existen límites a la ley civil. La ley civil estadounidense sobre inmigración establece límites y responsabilidades para el inmigrante. La ley de Cristo y la tradición judía cambian nuestro enfoque en la ley, de los límites y responsabilidades a nuestra capacidad de amar. El enfoque del “Gran Mandamiento” no está en la ley, sino en el amor.
Al considerar la inmigración, nuestro enfoque debe pasar del derecho civil a considerar otros mensajes de Moisés y Jesús: «No oprimirás ni afligirás al extranjero, porque extranjeros fueron en la tierra de Egipto» (Éx. 22:21), y «Fui forastero y me acogieron» (Mt. 25:35).
La Iglesia es consciente de las causas de la migración y los desafíos que plantea en el mundo actual. Si nos centramos en los propios migrantes, sus causas y la Ley de Dios, podemos reconocer la complejidad de los desafíos de la inmigración. Las leyes deficientes solo pueden abordarse cuando nuestro enfoque considere más de nuestros miedos y motivos egoístas. El amor es nuestra guía y nuestra meta.

Continuing a theme: Changing Focus
To continue the theme of changing the focus on immigration, consider “The Greatest Commandment.” It is given by Moses in Deuteronomy, is the response of a lawyer to Jesus’ question of “what is written in the Law?” And Jesus said in Matthew 22:37-39: “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
There are limits to civil law. U.S. civil law on immigration establishes limits and responsibilities of the immigrant. The law of Christ and Jewish tradition change our focus on law from limits and responsibilities, to our capacity to love. The focus of the “Greatest Commandment” is not on law, but on love.
When considering immigration, our focus needs to move from civil law to considering other messages of Moses and Jesus: “You shall not oppress or afflict a resident alien, for you were once aliens residing in the land of Egypt” (Ex. 22:21), and “I was a stranger and you welcomed me” (Mt. 25:35).
The Church is aware of the causes of migration and the challenges that migration poses in the world today. If we focus on the migrant themselves, the causes of migration and the Law of God, we can recognize the complexity of the challenges of immigration. Flawed legislation can only be addressed when our focus addresses more than our fears and selfish motives. Love is our guide and our goal.
