Celebrando a la Hna. Ruth McAndrew, RSM
El jueves celebramos la vida de mi tía, hermana de mi padre. Sus padres eran inmigrantes de Irlanda. Ruth era la octava de diez hijos. Estaba orgullosa de ser irlandesa y católica. Ingresó en las Hermanas de la Misericordia a los 17 años en 1944. Mary Catherine McAuley fundó las Hermanas de la Misericordia, con el carisma de ofrecer escuelas gratuitas para los pobres, academias para hijas de una clase media en ascenso y casas de la misericordia que ofrecían refugio a jóvenes pobres en peligro de explotación. El carisma y la vida comunitaria de las Hermanas de la Misericordia encajaron a la perfección con Ruth McAndrew.
Aunque entró en la vida religiosa muy joven, se mantuvo cerca de su familia durante toda su vida. Todos sus sobrinos y sobrinas recordamos su presencia en las reuniones familiares, y nuestra familia se reunía a menudo. Siempre quería saber cómo estábamos, y cuando yo ingresé en la vida religiosa, siempre sentí su aliento, pero no más que el apoyo que recibían todos mis primos en sus caminos. La Hermana Ruth decía que la mejor época de su vida religiosa fue su paso por los huerfanos. Esos fueron sus primeros años como hermana. Enseñó primer grado, y ocasionalmente segundo, durante cincuenta años. Decía que estos fueron los años cruciales en la formación y educación de los niños. Siendo seminarista, la visité una vez en un aula de primer grado. Cuando un niño tenía una pregunta o inquietud, podía prestarle total atención y aun así captar la atención de toda la clase.
Era firme en sus convicciones, dedicada a la familia, a la familia religiosa, a los necesitados y una maestra que sus alumnos no olvidaban.
Concédele el descanso eterno, Señor. Amén.

Celebrating Sr. Ruth McAndrew, RSM
On Thursday, we celebrated the life of my aunt, my father’s sister. Her parents were immigrants from Ireland. Ruth was the eighth of ten children. She was proud of being Irish and Catholic. She entered the Sisters of Mercy at age 17 in 1944. Mary Catherine McAuley founded the Sisters of Mercy, with a charism of providing free schools for the poor, academies for daughters of a rising middle class and houses of mercy providing shelter for poor youth who were in danger of exploitation. The charism and community life of the Sisters of Mercy were a great fit for Ruth McAndrew.
While she entered religious life early in life, she remained close to her family throughout her life. All of us nieces and nephews remember her presence at family gatherings, and our family gathered often. She always wanted to know how we were doing, and while I entered religious life, I always felt her encouragement, but no more so than all the cousins being supported in their life paths.
Sister Ruth said that the best time of her religious life was her time in the orphanages. Those were her early years as a sister. She taught first grade, and occasionally second grade for fifty years. She said that these were the critical years in the formation and education of children. As a seminarian, I once visited her in a first-grade classroom. When a child had a question or a concern, she could pay complete attention to the child and still hold the attention of the entire class.
She was strong in her convictions, dedicated to family, religious family, people in need and a teacher not forgotten by her students.
Eternal rest grant to her, O Lord. Amen.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
