El sábado 23 de agosto, el Papa León XIV se dirigió a legisladores católicos y líderes políticos en una reunión de la Red Internacional de Legisladores Católicos. Habló de San Agustín, cuya festividad se celebra el 28 de agosto. Dijo:

Este Padre de la Iglesia (Agustín) enseñó que en la historia de la humanidad se entrelazan dos “ciudades”: la Ciudad del Hombre y la Ciudad de Dios. Estas representan realidades espirituales: dos orientaciones del corazón humano y, por lo tanto, de la civilización humana. La Ciudad del Hombre, construida sobre el orgullo y el amor propio, se caracteriza por la búsqueda del poder, el prestigio y el placer; la Ciudad de Dios, construida sobre el amor a Dios hasta el altruismo, se caracteriza por la justicia, la caridad y la humildad. San Agustín reconoce las realidades separadas del Estado y la Iglesia, pero el desarrollo humano integral involucra a la persona en su totalidad: física, social, cultural, moral y espiritual. El Santo Papa Francisco reconoció los desafíos actuales al llamar a una “diplomacia de la esperanza”.

El Santo Papa León XIV añadió que “también necesitamos una ‘política de la esperanza’, una ‘economía de la esperanza’, basada en la convicción de que incluso ahora, por la gracia de Cristo, podemos reflejar su luz en la ciudad terrena”.

En el espíritu de San Agustín, necesitamos reconocer la esperanza tanto en la Ciudad de Dios como en la Ciudad del Hombre.

On Saturday, August 23, Pope Leo XIV addressed Catholic legislators and political leaders at a meeting of the International Catholic Legislators Network. He spoke of St. Augustine whose feast is August 28. He said:

This Church Father (Augustine) taught that within human history, two “cities” are intertwined: the City of Man and the City of God. These signify spiritual realities – two orientations of the human heart and, therefore, of human civilization. The City of Man, built on pride and love of oneself, is marked by the pursuit of power, prestige and pleasure; the City of God, built on love of God unto selflessness, is characterized by justice, charity and humility.

St. Augustine recognizes the separate realities of the State and the Church, but integral human development involves the whole person: physical, social, cultural, moral and spiritual. Pope Francis recognized the challenges of today by calling for a “diplomacy of hope.”

Pope Leo XIV added, “that we also need a “politics of hope”, an “economics of hope,” anchored in the conviction that even now, through the grace of Christ, we can reflect his light in the earthly city.”

In the spirit of St. Augustine, we need to recognize hope both in the City of God and the City of Man.

El Papa León XIV ha usado la frase, “desertificación espiritual” en unos mensajes. Lo ha utilizado en mensajes: para el Encuentro por la Amistad entre los Pueblos (22-27 de agosto) y para la Jornada Mundial del Migrante (4-5 de octubre). ¿Qué significa?

Los desiertos son generalmente lugares rechazados y considerados inadecuados para la vida. Y, sin embargo, allí, donde parece que nada puede nacer, la Sagrada Escritura vuelve continuamente a narrar los pasajes de Dios. En primer lugar, su pueblo nace en el desierto. De hecho, solo en su camino a través de sus inclemencias madura la opción por la libertad. Y donde los responsables de las instituciones estatales e internacionales parecen incapaces de hacer cumplir el estado de derecho, la mediación y el diálogo, las comunidades religiosas y la sociedad civil deben atreverse a ser proféticas.

Una fe ajena a la desertificación del mundo o que indirectamente contribuye a tolerarla ya no seguiría a Jesucristo. La revolución digital en curso corre el riesgo de acentuar la discriminación y el conflicto: por lo tanto, debe estar habitada por la creatividad de quienes, obedeciendo al Espíritu Santo, ya no son esclavos sino hijos. Entonces, el desierto se convierte en jardín y la “ciudad de Dios”, anunciada por los santos, transfigura nuestros lugares desolados.

No se dejen intimidar por la palabra “desertificación”. Describe mucho de lo que quienes no están presentes en nuestra iglesia hoy piensan sobre nuestra fe. Nuestro mensaje parece árido, aburrido y sin sentido. La gente quiere más. El Papa León ve la “señal” prometida por Isaías en los migrantes y refugiados de hoy.

Con su entusiasmo y vitalidad espiritual, pueden ayudar a revitalizar las comunidades eclesiales que se han vuelto rígidas y agobiadas, donde la desertificación espiritual avanza a un ritmo alarmante.

Para servir al Dios vivo, debemos abandonar la idolatría del lucro, que ha comprometido gravemente la justicia, la libertad de encuentro e intercambio, la participación de todos en el bien común y, en definitiva, la paz… Una fe ajena a la desertificación del mundo o que indirectamente contribuye a tolerarla ya no seguiría a Jesucristo. “Spiritual desertification”

Pope Leo XIV has used the phrase “spiritual desertification” in at least two messages. He did so in messages for the Meeting for Friendship Among Peoples (Aug. 22-27) and for World Day of Migrants (Oct. 4-5). What does it mean?

Deserts are generally places that are rejected and considered unsuitable for life. And yet there, where it seems that nothing can be born, the Sacred Scripture continually returns to narrate God’s passages. First of all, his people are born in the desert. Indeed, it is only on their journey through its harshness that the choice of freedom matures. And where those responsible for state and international institutions seem unable to enforce the rule of law, mediation and dialogue, religious communities and civil society must dare to be prophetic.

A faith that is estranged from the desertification of the world or that indirectly contributes to tolerating it would no longer be following Jesus Christ. The ongoing digital revolution risks accentuating discrimination and conflict: it must therefore be inhabited with the creativity of those who, obeying the Holy Spirit, are no longer slaves but children. Then the desert becomes a garden and the “city of God”, foretold by the saints, transfigures our desolate places.

Don’t let the word “desertification” throw you. It describes so much of what people who are not present in our church today think about our faith. Our message appears, dry, boring and meaningless. People want more. Pope Leo sees the “sign” promised by Isaiah in the migrant and refugees of today.

With their spiritual enthusiasm and vitality, they can help revitalize ecclesial communities that have become rigid and weighed down, where spiritual desertification is advancing at an alarming rate.

“In order to serve the living God, we must abandon the idolatry of profit, which has severely compromised justice, freedom of encounter and exchange, the participation of all in the common good and ultimately peace … A faith that is estranged from the desertification of the world or that indirectly contributes to tolerating it would no longer be following Jesus Christ.” (Pope Leo XIV, 07/25/25)

Mensajes de los Santos Papas

Visito regularmente el sitio web del Vaticano (https://www.vatican.va). Comencé a hacerlo durante mi tiempo como director del Ministerio Multicultural y Campesino en Fresno, entre 2009 a 2013. Es una buena manera de acceder a documentos y declaraciones papales oficiales. Los documentos están disponibles en varios idiomas, y en la sección “Magisterio” se encuentran las declaraciones directas y oficiales de los Santos Papas.

Es una forma cómoda y gratuita de leer encíclicas y exhortaciones apostólicas, no solo del Santo Papa actual, sino también de acceder a los documentos de otros, haciendo clic en sus imágenes. Siempre leo las encíclicas y las exhortaciones apostólicas, pero a veces las enseñanzas más interesantes provienen de las páginas de “Mensajes” y “Homilías”.

Para evitar información errónea sobre lo que el Santo Papa pudo haber dicho, o sobre lo que comentaristas, especialmente aquellos con algún tipo de sesgo político, se debe acudir a la fuente: las palabras del Santo Papa. Si uno ve mensajes duros e irregulares atribuidos al Santo Papa en sitios web populares, Facebook, YouTube e incluso en medios de comunicación convencionales, debería detenerse y verificar las palabras y enseñanzas actuales del Santo Papa y de la Iglesia.

Un buen amigo, generalmente bien informado sobre muchos temas de actualidad y declaraciones del Santo Padre, se molestó bastante con un comentario ampliamente difundido, atribuido al Papa. El comentario era duro y rígido. Le dije a mi amigo que lo revisara en el sitio web del Vaticano. Después, mi amigo me agradeció que lo hubiera recomendado. No solo encontró el mensaje del Papa esperanzador, sino también estimulante y, en general, alentador.

Una de las mejores cosas de los mensajes papales del sitio vaticano los es que suelen tratar de solo un tema y son breves. Son una buena fuente de reflexión y meditación. También contienen referencias que se pueden obtener fácilmente haciendo clic en las notas a pie de página. Espero que esto sea útil. Si alguien interpreta las enseñanzas de los Papas y las enseñanzas oficiales de la Iglesia como extrañas o duras, consúltelas. Paz.

Messages of Popes

I regularly visit the Vatican website (https://www.vatican.va). I began this practice during the time when I was the director for Multicultural and Campesino Ministry in Fresno, 2009-2013. It is a good way to get official papal documents and statements. The documents are available in many languages, and in the section under “Magisterium” the statements are the direct and official statements of the Popes.

It is a convenient and free way to read Encyclicals and Apostolic Exhortations of not only the present Pope, but when clicking on images of other Popes, one can receive their documents also. I always read the encyclicals and the apostolic exhortations, but sometimes the most interesting teaching comes from the pages for “Messages” and “Homilies”.

To avoid misinformation on what the Pope may have said, or what commentators, especially those with any form of political bias, one should go to the source, the words of the Pope. If one sees harsh and uneven messages attributed to the Pope on popular internet sites, Facebook, Youtube and even ordinary media sites, one should pause and verify actual words and teaching of the Pope and the Church.

A good friend who is generally well informed on many issues of today and statements of the Holy Father was quite upset with a widely publicized remark attributed to the Pope. The remark was harsh, and rigid. I told my friend to check it out on the Vatican website. Afterwards, my friend thanked me for directing him to the site. He not only found that the actual message of the Pope was hopeful, in ways challenging and overall uplifting.

One of the best parts of the Papal Messages is that they are usually on one topic and brief. The messages are a good source for reflection and meditation. They also contain references that are easily obtained by simply clicking on the footnotes. I hope that this is helpful. If someone interprets the teaching of Popes and official teaching of the Church strikes you as strange or harsh, check it out. Peace.

Atención sacramental extraordinaria

Quienes se dedican al ministerio migratorio responden a las necesidades extraordinarias de las personas con las que se encuentran. Responden a las necesidades legales, sanitarias, económicas, físicas y sociales de los migrantes. Se asume que los párrocos y los programas parroquiales se encargan de la atención espiritual y sacramental de todas las personas. Sin embargo, la inestabilidad y la falta de recursos impiden el acceso a la atención sacramental a muchas personas en la periferia. Consideren esta reflexión de un obispo que pidió a los líderes religiosos de su diócesis que presten atención a las personas que a menudo no están presentes en las actividades ordinarias de la iglesia.

Proclamando el Reino de Dios

Necesitamos preguntarnos a quiénes estamos y a quiénes no estamos proclamando el Reino de Dios con relación a la situación particular de nuestra Diócesis aquí en California Central.

Jesús se encontraba principalmente entre los pobres, los enfermos, los cojos, los afligidos, los oprimidos, los marginados, los leprosos, los cobradores de impuestos y los despreciados por la alta sociedad. A ellos especialmente Jesús les proclamaba el reino y el amor de Dios. ¿Quiénes son estas personas en nuestra sociedad y en nuestras parroquias? Son los pobres, las familias sin hogar, los trabajadores agrícolas y sus familias, los migrantes, los indocumentados, los enfermos, los prisioneros. La gran mayoría de estas personas solo asisten a Misa de vez en cuando.

Estas reflexiones hablan de los que viven al margen de la Iglesia, en carros, en campos de trabajo, en grupos aislados de casas, y en granjas y lecherías a través de la diócesis sin el lujo del transporte y sin estabilidad en sus vidas. Debemos ayudar pastoralmente, especialmente a aquellos que Nuestro Señor ama de una manera especial. Para ellos es el Reino de Dios.

El obispo John Steinbock fue obispo de Fresno de 1991 a 2010. Esto fue parte de su discurso en la convocatoria del clero de Fresno en enero de 2010.

Extra-ordinary sacramental care

People engaged in migration ministry respond to the extraordinary needs of the people they encounter. They respond to legal, health, economic, physical and social needs of migrants. There are assumptions that pastors and parish programs take care of the spiritual and sacramental care of all people. Yet instability and lack of resources make access to sacramental attention unavailable to many people on the periphery. Consider this reflection from a bishop asking religious leaders in his diocese to pay attention to people often not present in ordinary church activities.

Proclaiming the Kingdom of God

We need to ask ourselves to whom we are and to whom we are not proclaiming the kingdom of God, in relation to the particular situation of our diocese here in Central California. 

Jesus was found mostly amongst the poor, the sick, the lame, the suffering, the oppressed, the marginalized, the leper, tax collectors, those looked down upon and despised by the upper class. It was to these especially that he proclaimed the kingdom of God and manifested God’s love. Who are these people in our present society, and those within our parishes? They are the poor, the homeless families, the farmworkers and their families, the migrant, the undocumented, the sick, the imprisoned. The vast majority of these people rarely come to Mass. 

These reflections are speaking of those that live on the margin of the Church, living in cars, in labor camps, in isolated clusters of homes, and those that work on the farms and dairies found throughout our diocese, so often without the luxury of transportation and of living a normal scheduled life. We should be pastoral, especially to those that our Lord loves in a special way. It is just such as these that the kingdom of God is comprised.

Bishop John Steinbock was the bishop of Fresno from 1991 to 2010. This was part of his address at the convocation for Fresno clergy in January 2010.

Responder a la pregunta correcta

El secreto de un buen ministerio es aprender a responder a la pregunta correcta. Hablo de esto como experto en responder a la pregunta equivocada. Fue Juanita quien me enseñó una gran lección. Ya he contado esta historia antes, pero también encaja aquí.

Juanita se acercó a mí el penúltimo día de nuestro programa de Confirmación para preguntar: “Padre, ¿qué tengo que hacer para recibir el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo?”  No era la manera normal de pedir la Primera Comunión.  Le dije que nuestro programa era para gente como ella, pero ya estábamos en el penúltimo día de clase y que no podía recibir nuevas personas.  Ella empezó a llorar. Le pedí que se sentara y me contara su historia.

Juanita me contó que su familia había llegado la noche anterior y se enteró de nuestro programa por parte de sus primos que estaban en la clase.  También me contó que había vivido en diez ciudades en ocho años, que se había inscrito tres veces en las clases de Primera Comunión, pero que nunca había terminado los programas.  Cada vez tenía que empezar de nuevo.  Yo le hice preguntas de la fe.  Era evidente que ella estaba bien informada sobre el catolicismo.  Le pregunté: “¿Cómo es que sabes tanto acerca de la Iglesia?”  Ella me dijo: “Padre, vamos a Misa los domingos.  Somos católicos.  Solo somos migrantes”.  No había duda de que iba a seguir creciendo en su práctica de la fe católica.  La di la bienvenida a la clase.  Cuatro días después recibió la Confirmación y la Primera Comunión.

Su pregunta original solo se refería a su ingreso a nuestro programa sacramental, y coincidió con la finalización de las clases. De hecho, formuló la pregunta a la perfección. En cuanto escuché su historia, la respuesta fue obvia. Después de la comunión en la Misa de Confirmación, el obispo se inclinó hacia mí y me dijo: “La joven de la segunda fila está radiante”. Le dije que solo conocía una parte de la historia.

No debemos avergonzarnos si tenemos que responder una pregunta dos veces. Un joven le preguntó a Jesús: “Maestro, ¿qué debo hacer para obtener la vida eterna?” Tras repetirle los mandamientos, el joven volvió a preguntar: «Todos estos los he guardado. ¿Qué me falta todavía?».

Cuando se nos pide ayuda espiritual, debemos asegurarnos de responder a la pregunta correcta.

To answer the right question

The secret of good ministry is learning how to answer the right question. I speak on this as an expert at trying to answer the wrong question. It was Juanita who taught me a great lesson. I have told this story before, but it fits here also.

Juanita came to me on the second to the last day of our Confirmation program to ask, “Padre, what do I need to do to receive the Body and Blood of Christ?”  It was not the normal way a person may ask for First Communion.  I told her that our program was for people like her, but it was the second to the last day of class and we could not take on new people.  She began to cry.  I asked her to sit down and tell me her story.

Juanita explained that her family had arrived the night before and she found out about our program from her cousins who were in the class.  She told of having lived in 10 different towns in eight years, having three times entered First Eucharist classes but never completed the programs.  Each time the family moved, she had to begin again.  I asked her questions of faith.  It became clear that she was well informed on Catholicism.  I asked, “How is it that you know so much about the Church?”  She said, “Father, we go to Mass on Sundays.  We are Catholic.  We are just migrants.”  There was no doubt that she would continue to grow in her practice of the Catholic faith.  I welcomed her to the class.  Four days later she received Confirmation and First Eucharist.

All that I heard in her original question was about entering our sacramental program, and it happened to be when we were concluding our classes. Actually, she asked the question perfectly. Once I heard her story, the answer was obvious. After communion at the Confirmation Mass, the bishop leaned over to me and said, “The young lady in the second row is beaming.” I told him that he only knew part of the story.

We need not be embarrassed if we need to answer a question twice. A young man asked Jesus, “Teacher, what good must I do to gain eternal life?” After repeating for him the commandments, the young man asked again, “All of these I have observed. What do I still lack?”

When asked for spiritual care, we need to make sure that we are answering the right question.

La Palabra cambia nuestro enfoque

¿Por qué leemos la Biblia tantas veces? Aunque hayamos leído las historias diez o cien veces, hay algo nuevo para cada uno de nosotros y para todos nosotros. La Palabra de Dios es atemporal. Moisés, los profetas, Jesús y los apóstoles proclamaron la Palabra, no solo para su época, sino para siempre. Creemos que la Palabra de Dios revela el amor de Dios por nosotros y por toda la creación. En la primera lectura de hoy, Isaías dice:

Pondré en medio de ellos un signo, y enviaré como mensajeros a algunos de los supervivientes hasta los países más lejanos y las islas más remotas, que no han oído hablar de mí ni han visto mi gloria, y ellos darán a conocer mi nombre a las naciones. (Is. 66:19)

El mensaje del Papa León XIV para la Jornada Mundial de las Migraciones 2025 está disponible en el sitio web del Vaticano. Su mensaje se titula: “Migrantes, misioneros de esperanza”. Comienza:

El contexto mundial actual está tristemente marcado por guerras, violencia, injusticias y fenómenos meteorológicos extremos, que obligan a millones de personas a abandonar su tierra natal en busca de refugio en otros lugares … Migrantes, refugiados y desplazados son testigos privilegiados de la esperanza vivida en la cotidianidad, a través de su confianza en Dios y su resistencia a las adversidades 

El pasaje del profeta Isaías para hoy nos dice que sus discípulos reconocen que son el signo del amor de Dios enviado como fugitivos a todas las naciones. Al final del Evangelio de Mateo, Jesús envió a sus discípulos a «hacer discípulos de todas las naciones» (Mt. 28,19). El Papa León nos invita a centrarnos en la esperanza de los migrantes y refugiados. Dice:

En efecto, con su entusiasmo espiritual y su dinamismo, pueden contribuir a revitalizar comunidades eclesiales rígidas y cansadas, en las que avanza amenazadoramente el desierto espiritual.

No permite que el “desierto espiritual” te desanime. Esta describe mucho de lo que quienes no están presentes en nuestra iglesia hoy piensan sobre nuestra fe. Nuestro mensaje parece árido, aburrido y sin sentido. La gente quiere más. Muchos se sienten atraídos por experiencias de fe exóticas: el zen, el budismo, el misticismo y el pietismo. Sin embargo, el Papa León ve la “señal” prometida por Isaías en los migrantes y refugiados de hoy. Continúa:

En un mundo oscurecido por guerras e injusticias, incluso allí donde todo parece perdido, los migrantes y refugiados se erigen como mensajeros de esperanza.

El mensaje del Papa León, “Migrantes, misioneros de esperanza”, no se limita a los migrantes como signo de esperanza. No pretende avergonzarnos ni a nosotros ni a nuestra nación. Recuerden que él es de Chicago. Llama a todas las personas a asumir la energía y la esperanza de los refugiados. No solo se centra en el contexto actual de la migración, sino que también nos invita a centrarnos en la “gracia de Dios”. Dice de los migrantes:

Su presencia debe ser reconocida y apreciada como una verdadera bendición divina, una oportunidad para abrirse a la gracia de Dios, que da nueva energía y esperanza a su Iglesia.

Si nos convertimos, como nos llama el papa Francisco a ser «peregrinos de esperanza» y el papa León a «abrirse a la gracia de Dios», podremos comprender lo que dice Jesús en el Evangelio de Lucas:

Vendrán muchos del oriente y del poniente, del norte y del sur, y participarán en el banquete del Reino de Dios. (Lc. 13:29)

The Word changes our focus

Why do we read and re-read the Bible? Even though we have read the stories ten times or a hundred times, there is something new for each of us and for all of us to hear. The Word of God is timeless. Moses, the prophets, Jesus and the Apostles proclaimed the Word, not only for their own times, but for all time. We believe that the Word of God reveals God’s love for us and all of creation. In today’s first reading, Isaiah says:

I will set a sign among them; from them I will send fugitives to the nations: to Tarshish, Put and Lud, Mosoch, Tubal and Javan, to the distant coastlands that have never heard of my fame, or seen my glory; and they shall proclaim my glory among the nations. (Is. 66:19)

Pope Leo’s message for World Migration Day 2025 is available on the Vatican website. His message is titled, “Migrants, missionaries of hope.” He begins:

The current global context is sadly marked by wars, violence, injustice and extreme weather events, which force millions of people to leave their homelands in search of refuge elsewhere … Migrants, refugees and displaced persons are privileged witnesses of hope. Indeed, they demonstrate this daily through their resilience and trust in God, as they face adversity 

The passage of the prophet Isaiah for today is that his disciples recognize that they are the sign of God’s love sent as fugitives to all the nations. At the end of the gospel of Matthew, Jesus sent his disciples to “make disciples of all nations.” (Mt. 28:19) Pope Leo tells us to focus on the hope of migrants and refugees. He says:

With their spiritual enthusiasm and vitality, they can help revitalize ecclesial communities that have become rigid and weighed down, where spiritual desertification is advancing at an alarming rate.

Don’t let the word “desertification” throw you. It describes so much of what people who are not present in our church today think about our faith. Our message appears, dry, boring and meaningless. People want more. Many are attracted to exotic faith experiences. Zen, Buddhism, mysticism, and pietism. Yet, Pope Leo sees the “sign” promised by Isaiah in the migrant and refugees of today. He continues:

In a world darkened by war and injustice, even when all seems lost, migrants and refugees stand as messengers of hope.

Pope Leo’s message, “Migrants, missionaries of hope” is not only about the migrants as the sign of hope. It is not to shame us or our nation. Remember he is from Chicago. He calls on all people to take on the energy and hope of the refugees. Not only does he focus on the current context of migration, but that we need to focus on the “grace of God”. He says of the migrants:

Their presence, then, should be recognized and appreciated as a true divine blessing, an opportunity to open oneself to the grace of God, who gives new energy and hope to his Church.

If we become as Pope Francis calls us to be “Pilgrims of Hope” and Pope Leo calls us to “open ourselves to the grace of God” we may come to realize what Jesus says in the gospel of Luke:

And people will come from the east and the west and from the north and the south and will recline at table in the kingdom of God. (Lk. 13:29)

Cambiando el Enfoque del Ministerio de Migración

La semana pasada, escribí varias entradas de blog sobre cómo cambiar el enfoque hacia los migrantes, inmigrantes y refugiados. El mundo político se centra en los problemas que generan la migración forzada y en los desafíos que enfrentan las comunidades con la llegada de migrantes. Cuando la gente emigró a Estados Unidos, lo llamábamos el “sueño americano”. Hoy en día, muchos no ven la bondad, el talento, el ingenio y la esperanza de los inmigrantes entre nosotros. Esta semana, consideremos cambiar el enfoque del ministerio con y para los migrantes. A menudo se dice: “Antes de predicar al hambriento, dale de comer”. Sin embargo, si satisfacer las necesidades críticas de una persona que sufre es todo lo que hacemos, atendemos necesidades humanitarias, pero no evangelizamos. Ofrecemos servicio, no ministerio.

Cuidado espiritual para migrantes

El Papa Francisco dijo en la Alegría del Evangelio: “La peor discriminación que sufren los pobres es la falta de atención espiritual” (EG. 200). El ministerio de migración comienza por atender las necesidades físicas, legales, sociales, médicas y externas de los migrantes. Sin embargo, también debemos ofrecer acogida, misericordia, esperanza y sacramentos a nuestros hermanos y hermanas migrantes.

La siguiente reflexión está tomada de “Camina con mi gente”, página 195:

Ocho años después de aprender español, pasé dos veranos en The Dalles, Oregon, reemplazando a un sacerdote que salió para estudiar español. Cada tarde celebraba misa en diferentes campamentos de migrantes durante la cosecha de cereza. El segundo verano allí, le pregunté a la gente: “Si vuelvo el próximo verano, ¿qué más puedo hacer por ustedes además de las misas en el campamento?” La respuesta de una mujer me tocó una fibra sensible. Ella respondió: “No necesitamos que usted sea nuestro abogado o trabajador social. Necesitamos que sea nuestro sacerdote”.

En otra misa, un trabajador agrícola dijo: “Es más fácil para nosotros recibir ayuda de la Iglesia en materia de alimentos, asesoramiento sobre inmigración y servicios sociales que para nuestros hijos recibir su primera Comunión.” Esos veranos me permitieron un vistazo de las dificultades que experimentan los trabajadores migrantes para obtener servicios sacramentales básicos de la Iglesia. Muchas parroquias tienen requisitos para la recepción sacramental que hacen muy difícil que las personas con movilidad reducida participen en los sacramentos.

Después de escuchar a los trabajadores migrantes, crear un programa sacramental de verano para los trabajadores agrícolas migrantes que no tienen una iglesia o parroquia local fue bastante fácil. En lugar de llevar a la gente a la iglesia, llevamos la iglesia a la gente. Llevar la iglesia a personas en lugares aislados, como huertos, lecherías y campamentos de trabajo para migrantes, proporcionó acceso sacramental a muchos sin interferir con los programas parroquiales establecidos. Muchos párrocos y parroquias acogieron con agrado estos programas, pero no consideraron a otras personas que enfrentan barreras para acceder a los sacramentos en sus comunidades.

Esta semana, consideremos el cuidado espiritual de los migrantes. En lugar de buscar llevar a los migrantes a la iglesia, llevemos la iglesia a los migrantes.

Changing the Focus of Migration Ministry

Last week, I wrote several blogs on changing the focus on migrants, immigrants and refugees. The political world focuses on the problems that create forced migration, and the challenges communities experience when migrants arrive. When people immigrated to the United States, we called it the “American dream”. Today many fail to see the goodness, talents, ingenuity and hope of immigrants in our midst. This week, let us consider changing the focus of ministry with and for migrants. It is often said, “Before preaching to a hungry person, give him something to eat.” Yet, if meeting the critical needs of a person in pain is all that we do, we serve humanitarian needs, but we fail to evangelize. We provide service, not ministry.

Spiritual care for migrants

Pope Francis said in the Joy of the Gospel, “the worst discrimination which the poor suffer is the lack of spiritual care.” (EG. 200) Migration ministry begins with addressing the physical, legal, social, medical and external needs of the migrants. Yet, we also must offer welcome, mercy, hope and sacrament to our migrant brothers and sisters.  

The following reflection is taken from “Walk with My People”, page 50.

Eight years after I learned Spanish, I spent two summers in The Dalles, Oregon, replacing a priest who went away to study Spanish. Each evening, I celebrated Mass in different migrant camps during the cherry harvest. The second summer there, I asked the people, “If I return next summer, what more could I do for you other than the camp Masses?” One woman’s response struck a nerve. She replied, “We don’t need you to be our lawyer or social worker. We need you to be our priest.” 

At another Mass, a farmworker said, “It is easier for us to receive assistance from the Church for food, immigration counsel, and social services than for our children to receive their first Communion.” Those summers gave me a glimpse into the difficulties migrant workers experience in obtaining basic sacramental services from the Church. Many parishes have requirements for sacramental reception that make it difficult for people of mobility to participate in the sacraments. 

After listening to the migrant workers, creating a summer sacramental program for migrant farm workers who do not have a home church or parish was rather easy. Instead of bringing people to the church, we brought the church to the people. Taking the church to people in isolated locations, such as orchards, dairies, and migrant work camps provided sacramental access to many without interfering with established programs of parishes. Many pastors and parishes welcomed such programs, but failed to consider other people experiencing barriers to sacraments in their communities.

This week, let us consider the spiritual care of migrants. Instead of seeking to bring the migrants to the church, let us bring the church to the migrants.

Considera tu propia historia migratoria

Gente se muda por muchas razones. La migración puede ocurrir por oportunidades, aventura, educación, trabajo especializado y lazos familiares. Algunos se mudan en busca de un clima más agradable, recreación o jubilación. Lamentablemente, muchos se mudan debido a la inseguridad, desastres, persecución y violencia.

Durante una reunión con inmigrantes, los participantes compartieron sus razones para migrar, incluyendo la pobreza, el trabajo, la reunificación familiar, el miedo, la guerra o las crisis. Una mujer dijo: “No podía vivir con mi madre. Crucé el océano para alejarme de ella”. La motivación para emigrar adopta diversas formas, ya sean traslados de un estado a otro dentro de un país o al extranjero.

Considera estas preguntas:

  1. ¿Cómo llegaron tus padres o abuelos al lugar (ciudad, estado o nación) donde naciste? ¿De dónde venían?
  2. ¿Qué los motivó a mudarse de donde vivían?
  3. ¿Se ha mudado usted del lugar que consideraba su hogar? ¿Cuántas veces? ¿Dónde considera su hogar ahora?
  4. ¿Qué le motivó a mudarse a su hogar actual?
  5. ¿Alguna vez se ha sentido obligado a mudarse?

Consider your own migration history

People move for many reasons. Migration can occur due to opportunity, adventure, education, specialized work and family ties. Some relocate in search of a more pleasant climate, recreation, or retirement. Sadly, many move due to a lack of safety, disaster, persecution, and violence.

During a meeting with immigrants, participants shared their reasons for migration, including poverty, work, family reunification, fear, war, or crises. One woman said, “I couldn’t stand my mother. I crossed the ocean to get away from her.” Motivation to emigrate takes various forms, whether being movements from one state to another within a country or movement to foreign lands.

  1. How did your parents or grandparents arrive in the place (city, state, or nation) where you were born? Where did they come from?
  2. What motivated them to move from where they lived?
  3. Have you moved from the place you originally called home? How many times? Where do you consider home now?
  4. What motivated you to move to your current home?
  5. Have you ever felt compelled or forced to move?

Otra reflexión sobre cambiar el enfoque

Estos últimos cuatro días, reflexionar sobre el objetivo de cambiar nuestro enfoque en la migración ha sido liberador. Siguiendo estos blogs, ustedes saben que mi caminar con migrantes me llevó a una comunión con ellos que solo podía imaginar cuando comencé esta trayectoria en el ministerio migratorio hace más de treinta años. Cuando fundamos Casa San Alfonso en 1991, afirmamos que esperábamos ser evangelizados por los jóvenes que conocimos. No podíamos decir: “¿De verdad, estos jóvenes migrantes van a evangelizarnos?” Pero era una preocupación real. Si los jóvenes se sentían amados por nosotros, era solo un reflejo del amor que recibíamos.

Creyendo que Jesús nos ama, los desafíos de cada día son menos abrumadores. Al aprender a amarnos unos a otros, no podemos rendirnos. En lugar de considerar los aspectos negativos y los desafíos de la migración, busquemos el amor de Jesús en el migrante.

These past four days reflecting on the goal of changing our focus on migration has been liberating. Following these blogs, you know that my walking with migrants brought me into a fellowship with migrants that I could only imagine when I began this journey in migrant ministry over thirty years ago. When we began Casa San Alfonso in 1991, we claimed that we expected to be evangelized by the young people we met. We could not say, “Really, you expect these migrant youth are going to evangelize us?” But, it was an unspoken concern. If the youth felt loved by us, it was only a reflection of the love we received.

Believing that Jesus loves us, the challenges of each day are less daunting. Learning to love each other, we cannot give up. Instead considering the negatives and challenges of migration, let us look for Jesus’ love in the migrant.

Continuando con el tema: Cambio del Enfoque

Para continuar con el tema de cambiar el enfoque sobre la inmigración, consideremos “El Gran Mandamiento”. Moisés lo da en Deuteronomio y es la respuesta de un intérprete de la ley a la pregunta de Jesús: “¿Qué está escrito en la Ley?”. Jesús dijo en Mateo 22:37-39: “Amarás al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma y con toda tu mente. Este es el primer mandamiento. El segundo es semejante: Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo”.

Existen límites a la ley civil. La ley civil estadounidense sobre inmigración establece límites y responsabilidades para el inmigrante. La ley de Cristo y la tradición judía cambian nuestro enfoque en la ley, de los límites y responsabilidades a nuestra capacidad de amar. El enfoque del “Gran Mandamiento” no está en la ley, sino en el amor.

Al considerar la inmigración, nuestro enfoque debe pasar del derecho civil a considerar otros mensajes de Moisés y Jesús: «No oprimirás ni afligirás al extranjero, porque extranjeros fueron en la tierra de Egipto» (Éx. 22:21), y «Fui forastero y me acogieron» (Mt. 25:35).

La Iglesia es consciente de las causas de la migración y los desafíos que plantea en el mundo actual. Si nos centramos en los propios migrantes, sus causas y la Ley de Dios, podemos reconocer la complejidad de los desafíos de la inmigración. Las leyes deficientes solo pueden abordarse cuando nuestro enfoque considere más de nuestros miedos y motivos egoístas. El amor es nuestra guía y nuestra meta.

Continuing a theme: Changing Focus

To continue the theme of changing the focus on immigration, consider “The Greatest Commandment.” It is given by Moses in Deuteronomy, is the response of a lawyer to Jesus’ question of “what is written in the Law?” And Jesus said in Matthew 22:37-39: “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

There are limits to civil law. U.S. civil law on immigration establishes limits and responsibilities of the immigrant. The law of Christ and Jewish tradition change our focus on law from limits and responsibilities, to our capacity to love. The focus of the “Greatest Commandment” is not on law, but on love.

When considering immigration, our focus needs to move from civil law to considering other messages of Moses and Jesus: “You shall not oppress or afflict a resident alien, for you were once aliens residing in the land of Egypt” (Ex. 22:21), and “I was a stranger and you welcomed me” (Mt. 25:35).

The Church is aware of the causes of migration and the challenges that migration poses in the world today. If we focus on the migrant themselves, the causes of migration and the Law of God, we can recognize the complexity of the challenges of immigration. Flawed legislation can only be addressed when our focus addresses more than our fears and selfish motives. Love is our guide and our goal.
