El inicio de la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud
Muchos invitados llegaron el día antes de la ceremonia de apertura. Fue un día y una noche ocupados en recibir a personas que llegaban de todas partes del mundo. Un grupo de Chicago nos informó que un canal de noticias de Chicago estaba siguiendo a su grupo y quería ver cómo eran recibidos en Denver. CBS se enteró de nuestra actividad en la preparación de los eventos y pasó más de una hora visitando a los jóvenes sobre su llegada a Denver. Estuvimos en las noticias nacionales la noche anterior a la ceremonia de apertura. UNIVISION pasó la mayor parte del primer día en San José. Tres chicas se estaban inscribiendo para los eventos cuando entró Jorge Ramos de UNIVISION. Se rieron al reconocerlo, “Es él”. Les dije que quería entrevistarlos. Intentaron decir que no, pero él los entrevistó. No sé si aparecieron en las noticias más tarde, pero él y el equipo de UNIVISION complementaron la bienvenida brindada por una comunidad pobre de Denver.
La policía de Weed and Seed visitó nuestro sitio y las señoras de la cocina las invitaron a venir en cualquier momento que tuvieran hambre. Los jóvenes saludaron a la policía, se presentaron y les dijeron de dónde venían. La policía me dio su información de contacto si teníamos algún problema. Todavía estaban preocupados por el evento, pero estaban comenzando a entrar en la emoción del momento.
Una estación de radio de la Ciudad de México transmitió desde una estación local de Denver y me preguntó si podía traer a algunos de nuestros jóvenes de Denver a la estación para una entrevista sobre los preparativos para la llegada del Papa Juan Pablo II. Estaba feliz de traer a algunos de nuestros jóvenes, pero la locutora quería que comentara sobre la llegada del Santo Padre. Hablaba muy rápido y yo todavía estaba aprendiendo español. Reformulé su pregunta y luego respondí a la pregunta que propuse. Mi objetivo era desviar la atención de mí y del Papa, para que ella preguntara a los jóvenes qué significaba la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud. Los jóvenes luego dijeron que pensaban que yo no sabría lo que ella preguntaba. Les dije, apenas entendí una palabra de lo que dijo, así que respondí a la pregunta que quería que hiciera.
Un momento inesperado
Eran casi las 6:00 pm cuando tuve un descanso para ir a la rectoría. Cuando me dirigía a la puerta, un joven dijo: “Padre, soy Pepper. Quiero salir de una pandilla. ¿Podrías ayudarme?”. Mi momento de relajarme había terminado. Le pregunté qué podía hacer por él. Dijo: “La policía me busca. ¿Podrías entregarme?” Tenía miedo de entrar solo. Fuimos a la rectoría para llamar a los policías de Weed and Seed que me dieron su número de contacto. Cinco minutos después llegaron dos policias en bicicletas. Verificaron las órdenes de aprehensión. Llamaron a un coche para que lo recogiera. Le pregunté si la venida del Papa tenía alguna parte de su deseo de cambiar su vida. Él dijo: “¿Quién?” No tenía idea de lo que iba a suceder en Denver. Solo dijo que estaba cansado de meterse en problemas.
Opening Day of World Youth Day
Many guests arrived the day before the opening ceremonies. It was a day and an evening occupied with welcoming people arriving from all over the world. A group from Chicago informed us that a Chicago news channel was following their group and wanted to see how they were received in Denver. CBS learned about our activity in preparing for the events and spent over an hour visiting with young people about their arrival in Denver. We were on national news the night before the opening ceremonies took place. UNIVISION spent most of the first day at St. Joseph’s. Three girls were registering for events when Jorge Ramos from UNIVISION walked in. They giggled as they recognized him, “Es él.” I told them that he wanted to interview them. They tried to say no, but he did interview them. I do not know if they appeared on the news later, but he and the UNIVISION crew complemented the welcome given by a poor community in Denver.
The Weed and Seed police visited our site and the ladies in the kitchen invited them to come anytime that they were hungry. Young people greeted the police, introducing themselves and telling them where they came from. The police gave me their contact information if we had any problems. They still were apprehensive about the event, but they were beginning to get into the excitement of the moment.
A radio station from Mexico City broadcast from a local Denver station and asked if I could bring some of our youth from Denver to the station for an interview about the preparations for the arrival of Pope John Paul II. I was happy to bring some of our youth, but the interviewer wanted me to comment on the arrival of the Holy Father. She spoke very fast, and I was still learning Spanish. I rephrased her question and then answered the question that I proposed. My goal was to turn the attention away from me and the Pope, to get her to ask the youth what World Youth Day meant for them. The young people afterward said that they thought that I wouldn’t know what she asked. I told them, I barely understood a word that she said, so I answered the question that I wanted her to ask.
An unexpected moment
It was almost 6:00 pm when I had a break to go to the rectory. As I went to the door, a young man said, “Father, I am Pepper. I want out of a gang. Could you help me?” My moment to relax was over. I asked what I could do for him. He said, “I am wanted by the police. Could you turn me in?” He was afraid to go in alone. We went into the rectory to call the Weed and Seed officers who gave me their contact number. Five minutes later two officers came on bicycles. They verified the warrants for his arrest. They called for a car to pick him up. I asked him if the coming of the Pope had any part of his desire to change his life. He said, “Who?” He had no idea of what was about to take place in Denver. He just said that he was tired of getting into trouble.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
