“Crean en aquel a quien él ha enviado”
Mientras el mundo espera la elección de un nuevo Papa, el Evangelio de ayer es un tema apropiado para la reflexión. Jesús dijo: “La obra de Dios consiste en que crean en aquel a quien él ha enviado”. (Jn 6,29). Ayer pregunté: “¿Qué esperas de un Santo Papa?”. Es una pregunta que mucha gente se hace hoy, pero a medida que nos acercamos al inicio del Cónclave, creo que es mejor pedirle a Dios un espíritu de apertura hacia quienquiera que Él envíe. En la era actual de la comunicación, el mundo trata el nombramiento del Papa como si fuera la elección política de cualquier líder nacional. La prensa quiere una lista de candidatos. Los defensores de diversas ideologías desean promover a alguien identificado con sus causas, ya sean conservadores, liberales, progresistas o tradicionales. Y los casinos establecen una lista de probabilidades.
Hay algo en lo que las personas con agendas no confían: un proceso que exige a los electores papales entrar en un momento de discernimiento, oración y decisión. No importa qué agenda adoptemos, mientras los cardenales entran a la Capilla Sixtina oramos por el don de la confianza en “aquel que Dios envía”.

“Believe in the one he sent”
As the world awaits the election of a new Pope, yesterday’s gospel reading is an appropriate theme for reflection. Jesus said, “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent.” (Jn 6:29) Yesterday, I asked, “What do you hope for in a Pope?” It is a question that many people ask today, but as we get closer to the beginning of the Conclave, I believe it is better to ask of God a spirit of openness to whomever God sends. In today’s age of communication, the world treats the naming of the Pope as it would the political election of any national leader. The press wants a list of candidates. Advocates of various ideologies wish to promote someone identified with their causes whether they be conservative, liberal, progressive or traditional. And gamblers set a list of odds.
There is one thing that people with agendas fail to trust is a process that asks the papal electors to enter a moment of discernment, prayer and decision. No matter what agenda we may be partial to, as the Cardinals enter the Sistine Chapel we pray for the gift of trust in “the one God sends.”

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
