Llegada a Tijuana
Mientras lees este blog, estamos en Tijuana visitando ‘casas migrantes’ y comunidades religiosas que atienden a migrantes de todo el mundo. Estoy escribiendo este blog mientras nos preparamos para volar a Tijuana el martes 7 de junio. Al comenzar esta parte de nuestra investigación sobre la migración, muchos preguntan “¿qué haces por ellos?” Mientras escucho esa pregunta, soy cada vez más consciente de la frecuencia con la que hablamos de personas a las que realmente no conocemos como “ellos, o peor esos”. No queremos hacer daño a nadie cuando decimos las palabras, pero está claro que “esos” no son “nosotros”.
He escrito sobre esto antes, pero a medida que avanzamos en la consideración de la migración, únase a mí para tratar de dejar de hablar de “esos”. Cada migrante es una persona única con dignidad. El migrante es nuestra hermana y hermano. Hay tantos pasajes de las Escrituras a los que podemos referirnos al considerar a cada persona con la que nos encontramos. Caín le preguntó a Dios: “¿Soy yo el guardián de mi hermano?” Y sabemos que la respuesta correcta es “Sí”. Por supuesto, Jesús dijo: “Ámense los unos a los otros como yo los he amado”.
Sé que nos encontraremos con hermanos y hermanas que han sufrido mucho. Algunos pueden no ser fáciles de reconocer como hermanos y hermanas, pero lo son. Habrá muchos que sean fáciles de reconocer, ya que conocen su propia dignidad, y responderán con gratitud a cualquier bondad que podamos ofrecerles. Sé que las personas que me preguntan qué hago por ‘ellos’ les desean lo mejor a los migrantes. Pero es importante que reconozcamos nuestra buena fortuna de no estar tan desesperados que arriesguemos todo, incluso nuestras vidas, para estar seguros entre las personas que amamos.
He decidido no llevar mi computadora conmigo en nuestro viaje, por lo que los blogs que publique durante los próximos diez días solo pueden provenir de mi teléfono, por lo que pueden ser breves. Trataré de escribir de vez en cuando durante esos días. Ruega por nosotros y por los migrantes que buscan asilo y refugio.

Arrival in Tijuana
As you read this blog today, we are in Tijuana visiting ‘casas migrantes’ and religious communities serving migrants from all over the world. I am writing this blog as we prepare to fly to Tijuana on Tuesday, June 7. As we begin this part of our research into migration, many ask “what do you do for them?” As I hear that question, I am more and more aware of how often when we speak about people whom we do not really know as “them, those people”. We do not mean harm to anyone as we say the words, but it is clear that “they” are not “us”.
I have written about this before, but as we go forward in considering migration, please join me in trying to stop talking about “them”. Each migrant is a unique person with dignity. The migrant is our sister and brother. There are so many scriptures that we may refer to as we consider each person whom we meet. Cain asked God, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” And we know that the correct answer is, “Yes”. Of course, Jesus said, “Love one another as I have loved you.”
I know that we will meet brothers and sisters who have suffered much. Some may not be easy to recognize as brothers and sisters, but they are. There will be many who are easy to recognize, as they know their own dignity, and they respond with gratitude to any kindness that we may offer. I know that people who ask me about what I do for ‘them’ wish the migrants well. But it is important that we recognize our good fortune not to be so desperate that we risk everything, even our lives to be safe amongst the people we love.
I have decided not to take my computer with me on our trip, so any blogs that I publish for the next ten days can only come from my phone, so they may be brief. I will try to write a few times over those days. Pray for us and for the migrants seeking asylum and refuge.
Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
