Are the poor excluded?

Yesterday, I remembered a rural pastor saying, “We are not to keep people out of the church, but to bring them into the Church.” After many years of working the marginalized of the Church, I have witnessed the truth of Pope Francis’ assertion that, “the worst discrimination which the poor suffer is the lack of spiritual care. The great majority of the poor have a special openness to the faith; they need God, and we must not fail to offer them his friendship, his blessing, his word, the celebration of the sacraments and a journey of growth and maturity in the faith.” (EG. 200)

Time and again migrant farmworkers tell of the difficulty they have in presenting their children for the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. I have celebrated Masses in migrant camps, orchards, dairies, vineyards, lumber yards, parks, community centers, trailer parks and garages. Often the participants are migrant workers and immigrants. When it is time for Communion, very few believe that they can come to receive Jesus’ body and blood. They are not ignorant of what the Eucharist is. They are more reverent than many congregations that I have known. Many have been denied First Communion. Many live unstable lives because of conditions of their work and many lack legal rights. Many have been shamed because of poverty and the instability of their lives.

I understand that many of the adults live in marriages or relationships not blessed by the Church. Many have very little opportunity to have their unions blessed in the Church because of their impoverished life. But, listen to them. Observe them in their faith.

My greatest sadness is having people in Church ministry who do not question practices in our churches that fail to reach out to the poor. The poor have faith, let us discover that faith. “We must not fail to offer them his friendship, his blessing, his word, the celebration of the sacraments.”

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
