Alegría y esperanza
En 1965, después de dos guerras mundiales y muchos avances en ciencia, salud, transporte, aviación, comunicación, educación y conciencia social, existían preocupaciones sobre cómo la Iglesia podía y debía abordar el mundo moderno. El Concilio abordó esas preocupaciones en el documento sobre la Iglesia en el mundo moderno, comenzando con las palabras “Gaudium et Spes”, Alegría y esperanza. Durante el papado del Papa Francisco, la alegría y la esperanza han sido temas importantes. Su primera Exhortación Apostólica fue “La alegría del Evangelio”, y para este año de Jubileo, nos llama a ser “Peregrinos de esperanza”.
La alegría y la esperanza son virtudes necesarias en todo momento dentro de la Iglesia. Los tiempos son bastante diferentes desde la década de 1960 hasta hoy. Probablemente, la alegría y la esperanza son más importantes hoy que en cualquier otro momento de la historia reciente.

Joy and Hope
In 1965, after two World Wars and many advancements in science, healthcare, transportation, aviation, communication, education, and social awareness, there were concerns about how the Church could and should approach the modern world. The Council addressed those concerns in the document on the Church in the Modern World, beginning with the words, “Gaudium et Spes”, Joy and Hope. During the papacy of Pope Francis, joy and hope have been important themes. His first Apostolic Exhortation was “The Joy of the Gospel,” and for this year of Jubilee, he calls on us to be “Pilgrims of Hope.”
Joy and hope are virtues needed at all times within the Church. The times are quite different from the 1960’s to today. Probably, joy and hope are more important today than any time in recent memory.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
