¿Por qué tanta crueldad?
No entiendo la hostilidad de Estados Unidos hacia la gente desafortunada. Nuestro gobierno no sólo es cruel en su trato con los criminales, sino que trata peor a las víctimas de la opresión, el crimen y la crueldad. Parece que sólo hay una motivación en el presidente Trump: la crueldad hacia cualquiera que pueda abusar. El Congreso, el Senado y los tribunales son simplemente cobardes ante su crueldad. Puede que a algunos les haya resultado entretenido cuando tenía un programa llamado “The Apprentice”, pero su crueldad está destruyendo una nación que comenzó con la declaración: “Consideramos que estas verdades son evidentes: que todos los hombres son creados iguales, que son dotados por su Creador de ciertos derechos inalienables”.
¿Podrá sobrevivir nuestra nación? ¿Seguirá sin control esta crueldad? ¿Se reivindicará alguna vez el espíritu de los miembros fundadores de esta nación?
La crueldad de separar a los niños de sus familias, de llamar criminales a los inmigrantes porque los políticos estadounidenses se han resistido a reformar un sistema de inmigración que no funciona, y de negar la dignidad humana a los pobres y desafortunados del mundo son más que un problema político. Son un desafío moral. ¿Descubrirán los líderes religiosos maneras para que la Iglesia Católica se ponga del lado de los pobres y los inmigrantes con los que Jesús se identificó?
Oremos por la reunión de los líderes y defensores católicos de la inmigración en la Segunda Conferencia Católica Nacional sobre Migración que se está celebrando en este momento en Washington, DC.

Why such cruelty?
I do not understand America’s hostility to unfortunate people. Not only is our government cruel in its treatment of criminals. It treats victims of oppression, crime and cruelty worse. There appears to be only one motivation found in President Trump, cruelty to anyone he can abuse. The Congress, the Senate and the Courts are simply cowards in the face of his cruelty. It may have been entertaining to some while he had a program called the “Apprentice”, but his cruelty is destroying a nation that began with the statement, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights.”
Can our nation survive? Will this cruelty remain unchecked? Will the spirit of the founding members of this nation ever be claimed?
The cruelty of separating children from families, calling migrants criminals because American politicians have resisted reforming a broken immigration system, and denying human dignity to the poor and unfortunate people of the world are more than a political problem. They are a moral challenge. Will religious leaders discover ways for the Catholic Church to stand with the poor and the migrant with whom Jesus identified himself?
Pray for the gathering of Catholic immigration leaders and advocates at the Second National Catholic Conference on Migration being held at this time in Washington, DC.
