¿Cuál es su esperanza?
En un mes, la administración Trump ha eliminado casi todos los logros de los últimos treinta años en obras de justicia para los inmigrantes. Y en los últimos años, los pasos positivos hacia la renovación en la Iglesia iniciados en el Concilio Vaticano II han flaqueado debido a una reacción contra el espíritu del Concilio. En un momento de peligro político y divisiones dentro de la Iglesia, el Papa Francisco inició este año de Jubileo llamándonos a ser “Peregrinos de la Esperanza”.
En mi vida como Redentorista, aspiré a trabajar por los “más abandonados”. La manera de hacerlo era trabajar por la justicia en la vida diaria y para que la Iglesia fuera más acogedora con los pobres y los inmigrantes. Como defensor de los derechos de los inmigrantes, trabajé para proteger y caminar con los migrantes. Celebré las costumbres y la cultura de los pueblos latinos. Dentro de la Iglesia, trabajé para dar la bienvenida a los migrantes, a la palabra y a los sacramentos.
Como “Peregrinos de la Esperanza”, debemos recordar que una peregrinación no es simplemente una caminata. Es un viaje desafiante. Cruza montañas y arroyos. Puede ser a través de un frío glacial o de un calor sofocante. No es un viaje tranquilo. Y el destino sólo se ve el último día. Al comenzar la Cuaresma la semana que viene, identifiquemos nuestra esperanza.
A veces, en el camino de la vida, parece que damos tres pasos hacia adelante y cinco hacia atrás. Después de un mes de un presidente que persigue a la gente que amo y de la mala salud de un Papa cuya preocupación por los inmigrantes inspiró el ministerio con los migrantes, es difícil no desanimarse. Como “Peregrinos de la Esperanza”, estamos en un viaje sin saber realmente el destino, pero sigamos caminando juntos con confianza en Dios.

What is your hope?
In one month, the Trump administration has taken away almost all of the gains of the past thirty years in works of justice for immigrants. And in recent years, the positive strides towards renewal in the Church begun in the Second Vatican Council have faltered on account of a backlash against the spirit of the Council. In a time of political peril and divisions within the Church, Pope Francis initiated this year of Jubilee calling us to be “Pilgrims of Hope.”
In my life as a Redemptorist, I aspired to work for the “most abandoned”. The way to do so was to work for justice in daily life and that Church become more welcoming of the poor and the immigrant. As an advocate for the rights of migrants, I worked to protect and to walk with immigrants. I celebrated the customs and culture of Latino peoples. Within the Church, I worked to welcome the migrants, to the word and the sacraments.
As “Pilgrims of Hope”, we need to remember that a pilgrimage is not simply a walk or a hike. It is a challenging journey. It crosses mountains and streams. It can be through freezing cold or suffocating heat. It is not a leisurely journey. And the destination is only seen on the last day. As we begin Lent next week, may we identify our hope.
Sometimes on the path of life it seems that we take three steps forward and five steps back. After one month of a President persecuting the people I love and the failing health of a Pope whose concern for immigrants inspired ministry with migrants, it is difficult not to get discouraged. As “Pilgrims of Hope” we are on a journey without truly knowing the destination, but let us continue walk together with confidence in God.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
