Church without borders, Mother to all.” / “Una Iglesia sin fronteras, Madre de todos”.

Papa Francisco: Jornada Mundial de las Migraciones 2015, “Una Iglesia sin fronteras, Madre de todos”.
A veces, las traducciones de los documentos del Vaticano ofrecen traducciones literales en inglés que pueden ser apropiadas en otras partes del mundo, pero que en los Estados Unidos tendrían menos impacto. Un ejemplo es el programa médico para migrantes a lo largo de la frontera que se llama en inglés “Doctors without borders” y en español “Médicos sin fronteras”. En inglés decimos “Iglesia without borders”.
En el primer párrafo, el Papa Francisco simplemente proclama la misión de la Iglesia:
” La Misión de la Iglesia, peregrina en la tierra y madre de todos, es por tanto amar a Jesucristo, adorarlo y amarlo, especialmente en los más pobres y desamparados; entre éstos, están ciertamente los emigrantes y los refugiados, que intentan dejar atrás difíciles condiciones de vida y todo tipo de peligros.
“La Iglesia abre sus brazos para acoger a todos los pueblos, sin discriminaciones y sin límites.”
Esta misión de la Iglesia tiene resonancia en los orígenes de los Estados Unidos. La Declaración de Independencia comienza así:
“Sostenemos como evidentes estas verdades: que todos los hombres son creados iguales, que son dotados por su Creador de ciertos derechos inalienables, que entre ellos están la vida, la libertad y la búsqueda de la felicidad”.
También, en la Estatua de la Libertad, la poeta Emma Lazarus afirma:
“Dadme a vuestros rendidos, a vuestros pobres, vuestras masas hacinadas anhelando respirar en libertad, el desamparado desecho de vuestras rebosantes playas. Enviadme a estos, los desamparados, azotados por las tempestades”.
La Iglesia es un testimonio de solidaridad con todas las personas que va más allá de la comprensión de todas las naciones del mundo. No sólo acogemos a los migrantes, los vemos como nuestros hermanos y hermanas. La Iglesia sin fronteras representa el amor de Dios, que no tiene favoritos y no se limita a los que hacen cosas buenas o viven vidas éticas y morales. La Iglesia acoge a los pecadores. Nuestro amor por los pecadores debe ir más allá de rezar por ellos, sino de perdonarlos y acogerlos verdaderamente.

Pope Francis: World Migration Day 2015, “Church without borders, Mother to all.”
Sometimes, the translations of Vatican documents, offer literal translations in English that may be appropriate in other parts of the world, but in the United States would make less impact. An example is that a medical program for migrants along the border in Spanish is called, “Médicos sin fronteras” or “Doctors without Borders.” In this document, “fronteras” technically is translated as “frontiers”, but it is better for us to speak of a “Church without borders.”
In the first paragraph, Pope Francis simply proclaims the mission of the Church:
“The mission of the Church, herself a pilgrim in the world and the Mother of all, is thus to love Jesus Christ, to adore and love him, particularly in the poorest and most abandoned; among these are certainly migrants and refugees, who are trying to escape difficult living conditions and dangers of every kind.”
“The Church opens her arms to welcome all people, without distinction or limits.”
This mission of the Church has resonance in the beginnings of the United States. The Declaration of Independence begins:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Also, on the Statue of Liberty, the poet Emma Lazarus states:
“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me.”
The Church is a witness to solidarity with all people that goes beyond the understanding of all nations in the world. We do not only welcome migrants, we see them as our brothers and sisters. The Church without borders represents the love of God, which has no favorites and is not limited to those who do good things or live moral ethical lives. The Church welcomes sinners. Our love for the sinner must go beyond praying for them, but truly forgiving and welcoming them.
