CAPÍTULO 1: CAMINAR CON MI PUEBLO
MI MINISTERIO COMIENZA
Cuando comencé a aprender español, el P. Enrique López, CSsR, dijo: “Espero que no seas uno de esos que piensa que cuando aprende el español, ya sabe todo lo que necesita saber para trabajar con los latinos. Necesitas conocer las costumbres, la fe, y la lucha de mi pueblo. Si no caminas con mi pueblo, no te molestes en aprender español”.
Al principio me molestaron sus palabras: “Si no caminas con mi pueblo, no te molestes en aprender español”. Pero a medida que pasan los años, agradezco cada día su guía. Me hizo darme cuenta de que necesitaba saber mucho más que el idioma español. Necesitaba comprender las culturas, tradiciones, fe, luchas e historia de las personas a las que serviría. Aprender a caminar con los hispanos no siempre ha sido fácil, pero ha sido necesario.

My Ministry Begins
When I began to learn Spanish, Fr. Enrique Lopez, CSsR, said, “I hope you are not one of those who thinks that once you learn Spanish, you know all that you need to know to work with Latinos. You need to know the customs, the faith, and the struggles of my people. If you will not walk with my people, don’t bother to learn Spanish.”
At first, I was bothered by his words, “If you will not walk with my people, don’t bother to learn Spanish.” But as the years pass, I am grateful every day for his guidance. He made me realize I needed to know much more than the Spanish language. I needed to understand the cultures, traditions, faith, struggles, and history of the people whom I would serve. Learning how to walk with Hispanic people has not always been easy, but it has been necessary.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
