¿Cómo llegó a apasionarse tanto por el ministerio a los inmigrantes?
Tuve algunos mentores excelentes a lo largo del camino. Entre ellos, quiero llamar la atención sobre un obispo que jugó un papel fundamental en mi camino.
Poco después de mi año sabático en 2007, escribí a varios obispos que buscaban ofrecer misiones en sus diócesis. El obispo John Steinbock en Fresno me pidió que pasara un año en su diócesis para ofrecer misiones en parroquias con grandes comunidades de campesinos. Ofrecí misiones en más de veinte parroquias y misiones de la diócesis. Después de las misiones, me pidió que fuera el director del Ministerio Campesino de la diócesis. En enero de 2010, el obispo Steinbock dio un discurso a todos los sacerdotes en nuestra convocatoria diocesana. No sabíamos en ese momento que su discurso sería su último discurso a todos los sacerdotes. Poco después de la convocatoria, el obispo Steinbock anunció que se estaba muriendo de cáncer. Jesús se encontraba principalmente entre los pobres, los enfermos, los cojos, los afligidos, los oprimidos, los marginados, los leprosos, los cobradores de impuestos y los despreciados por la alta sociedad. A ellos especialmente Jesús les proclamaba el Reino y el amor de Dios. ¿Quiénes son estas personas en nuestra sociedad y en nuestras parroquias? Son los pobres, las familias desamparadas, los trabajadores agrícolas y sus familias, los migrantes, los indocumentados, los enfermos, los prisioneros. La gran mayoría de estas personas solo asisten a misa de vez en cuando.
Estas reflexiones hablan de los que viven en el margen de la Iglesia, en carros, en campos de trabajo, en grupos aislados de casas, y en granjas y lecherías a través de la diócesis sin el lujo del transporte y sin estabilidad en sus vidas. Debemos ayudar pastoralmente a aquellos que nuestro Señor ama de una manera especial. Para ellos es el Reino de Dios.

Esta carta pastoral del obispo Steinbock al clero de la diócesis de Fresno captura la relación de Jesús con las personas marginadas. Jesús caminaba con los pobres. Al reconocer a los que “asisten la misa de vez en cuando”, nos dijo que seamos pastorales “a aquellos que nuestro Señor ama de una manera especial”. También debemos incluir la preocupación por aquellos que no pueden asistir a Misa debido al trabajo. Durante la crisis de COVID19, damos cuenta de muchas personas desconocidas que identificamos trabajadores esenciales. Los trabajadores esenciales incluyen campesinos, servidores de comida, enfermeras, choferes de transporte y otros servidores.

How did you become so passionate about migrant ministry?
I had some excellent mentors along the way. Among them, I want to call attention to one bishop who played a pivotal role in my journey.
Shortly after my sabbatical in 2007, I wrote to several bishops seeking to offer missions in their dioceses. Bishop John Steinbock in Fresno asked me to spend a year in his diocese to offer missions in parishes with large communities of campesinos, farm laborers. I offered missions in over twenty parishes and missions of the diocese. After the missions, he asked me to be the Director for Campesino Ministry for the diocese. In January 2010, Bishop Steinbock gave an address to all the priests at our diocesan convocation. We did not know at the time that his talk would be his last address to the priests. Shortly after the convocation, Bishop Steinbock announced that he was dying of cancer. Here is part of his talk.
“Proclaiming the Kingdom of God”
Jesus was found mostly amongst the poor, the sick, the lame, the suffering, the oppressed, the marginalized, the leper, tax collectors, those looked down upon and despised by the upper class. It was to these especially that He proclaimed the Kingdom of God, and manifested God’s love. Who are these people in our present society, and those within our parishes? They are the poor, the homeless families, the farm workers and their families, the migrant, the undocumented, the sick, the imprisoned. The vast majority of these people rarely come to Mass.
These reflections are speaking of those that live on the margin of the Church, living in cars, in labor camps, in isolated clusters of homes, and those that work on the farms and dairies found throughout our diocese, so often without the luxury of transportation and of living a normal scheduled life. We should be pastoral, especially to those that our Lord loves in a special way. It is just such as these that the Kingdom of God is comprised.

This pastoral letter of Bishop Steinbock to the clergy of the diocese of Fresno captures the relationship of Jesus to people on the margins. Jesus walked with the poor. As he recognized those who “rarely come to Mass“, he told us to be pastoral “to those that the Lord loves in a special way.” We also need to include concern for those unable to come to Mass on account of work. During the crisis of COVID19, we became aware of many people whom we take for granted as essential workers. Essential workers include those in agriculture, food services, health care, trucking and the many other services. Often, they also are outside the ordinary ministry of our churches.
