Doctrina social católica sobre la inmigración
No hay respuestas fáciles a la migración global. La hostilidad hacia el inmigrante es anticristiana y contraproducente. El movimiento de personas por desesperación es impulsado por muchas naciones que no pueden o no quieren crear un entorno seguro para que viva la gente. La inmigración ejerce presión sobre las economías y la estabilidad de las naciones que reciben inmigrantes. El racismo y los sentimientos antiinmigrantes llevan a los gobiernos a cerrar fronteras y expulsar a los inmigrantes. En lugar de cooperación internacional ante una crisis migratoria global, las naciones responden por separado. La crisis crece, mientras que las naciones carecen de la voluntad y la fortaleza para responder a los desafíos de la migración global.
Es fácil decir: “Ama a tu prójimo como te amas a ti mismo”. Es difícil acoger al extraño. La enseñanza social católica tiene sus raíces en las Escrituras, desde el comienzo mismo de la creación en la historia de Caín y Abel, “¿Soy yo el guardián de mi hermano?”, hasta las enseñanzas y el ejemplo de Jesús. El cuidado de los “más abandonados” inspiró no sólo al fundador de mi Congregación, sino a los fundadores de muchas comunidades religiosas de hombres y mujeres. Durante los siglos XIX y XX, la enseñanza social de la Iglesia enfrentó los desafíos de la industrialización, el colonialismo y las teorías y políticas económicas. Las sociedades de San Vicente de Paulo, los Caballeros de Colón, el Trabajador Católico y otros grupos se formaron para organizar a la gente en defensa de los oprimidos y los desafortunados del mundo. Se formaron Caridades Católicas, Catholic Relief Services y muchas asociaciones de voluntarios para defender y proteger a los migrantes y refugiados.
Nuestro mensaje proviene de Jesús, quien nos dijo que lo reconoceríamos en el hambriento, el sediento, el extraño, el prisionero y en tantos otros desatendidos del mundo. El migrante de hoy es el rostro de Jesús. No le fallemos a nuestro Señor.

There are no easy answers to global migration. Hostility to the immigrant is unchristian and counterproductive. The movement of people out of desperation is spurred by many nations unable or unwilling to create a safe environment for people to live. Immigration brings stress on the economies and stability of those nations receiving migrants. Racism and anti-immigrant sentiments move governments to close borders and send migrants away. Instead of international cooperation in the face of a global migration crisis, nations respond separately. The crisis grows, while nations lack the will and the fortitude to answer the challenges of global migration.
It is easy to say, “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” It is difficult to welcome the stranger. Catholic social teaching is rooted in Scripture, from the very beginning of creation in the story of Cain and Able, “Am I my brother’s keeper”, to Jesus’ teaching and example. Care for the “most abandoned” inspired not only my Congregation’s founder, but the founders of many religious communities of men and women. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the Church’s social teaching met the challenges of industrialization, colonialism, economic theories and policies. St. Vincent de Paul societies, the Knights of Columbus, the Catholic Worker and other groups formed to organize people in defense of the oppressed and the unfortunate of the world. Catholic Charities, Catholic Relief Services and many volunteer associations formed to defend and protect migrants and refugees.
Our message comes from Jesus, who told us that we would recognize him in the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the prisoner, and so many who are the underserved in the world. Today’s migrant is the face of Jesus. Let us not fail our Lord.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
