All of the lay missionaries and seminarians who worked those missions helped accomplish so much. I have tried to explain how we prepared for those missions to others. I disappoint many when I explain that each mission needed preparation appropriate to the mission itself and the gifts of each mission team. The SEE, JUDGE, ACT process presented in the National Pastoral Plan for Hispanic Ministry guided us as we prepared for mission. Even though we offered a Sacramental Mission for migrant workers in The Dalles, OR each year for eleven years, we needed extraordinary flexibility as each year we always had several surprises the necessitated adaptations of our programs.

  4. Animar: Alentar, motivar, desafiar y apoyar al estudiante.
  5. Enviar: Cada persona es llamada por Dios. Cada uno tiene una misión.

Lay Missionary Formation

To all the followers of the Padre Migrante blogs, many of you have been part of my life for many years. I enjoy recognizing family members and longtime friends responding to these blogs. I am especially happy with those who participated on mission experiences with me. So many of you participated on missions for migrant workers in The Dalles, California and Mississippi. Others have participated in retreats, training programs for ministry and mission preaching. Also, I cherish our days at Casa San Alfonso with the mission trips we made in Colorado. Memories from those mission teams impact the training sessions for Catholic Migrant Farmworker Network that I offer today.

Those missions took place over the past thirty years, and each mission had its own special moments of grace. I especially recall those missions that welcomed migrant workers and their families to the sacraments. I want to thank so many for making it possible to welcome children to the Eucharist, young people to Confirmation, parents who baptized their children and for couples who received the blessing of their love in Marriage. I could never have done those things without your sacrifices, generosity and joy.

While programs changed, our missionaries needed certain attributes. Here are five things that a missionary offers to the People of God.

  1. Honor: Give honor and respect to those whom we meet on the mission.
  2. Educate: Teach the students a reverence for Scripture, faith, sacrament and ethics.
  3. Form: Model the faith in prayer, moral life, compassion and humility.
  4. Animate: Encourage, motivate, challenge and support the student.
  5. Send: Each person is called by God. Each has a mission.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
