The poor in spirit / Los pobres de espíritu

(GE 70)

The poor in spirit

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”

When Jesus begins the Sermon on the Mount, he immediately signals that his message is going to challenge people to look at the world differently

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus presents a message that is out of step with not only the people of his time, but ours as well. “Blessed are the poor” is shocking in a world where people are rewarded for accomplishments. It is often misunderstood. It is a recognition that human dignity comes from our being, not from our effort and discipline. The spirit of poverty accepts our humanity in good health and in ill health. It is an attitude that brings us interior freedom.

In the Gospel of Luke, he does not speak of “poor in spirit”, but Jesus calls us to live a simple life. “He calls us to share in the life of those most in need, the life lived by the Apostles, and ultimately to configure ourselves to Jesus who, though rich, “made himself poor” (2 Cor 8:9).

Being poor of heart: that is holiness. (GE 70)

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
