Enemigos de la santidad
En el capítulo dos de “La llamada a la santidad”, el Papa Francisco escribe sobre “dos sutiles enemigos de la santidad”. El capítulo comienza con la consideración de la manifestación de dos herejías antiguas pero persistentes en la Iglesia, el Gnosticismo y el Pelagianismo. Este capítulo no trata sobre la historia de las dos herejías, sino sobre las formas en que cada una puede ser vista en la Iglesia hoy. El Papa Francisco nos prepara para “otro camino” y ese es la ley del amor, manifestada en el mismo Jesús.
Con respeto a las Escrituras y la tradición de la Iglesia, el Papa Francisco expresa su preocupación porque “Esto ocurre cuando algunos grupos cristianos dan excesiva importancia al cumplimiento de determinadas normas propias, costumbres o estilos.” (GE 58) Estos pueden ser gravosos: “Santo Tomás de Aquino nos recordaba que los preceptos añadidos al Evangelio por la Iglesia deben exigirse con moderación «para no hacer pesada la vida a los fieles», porque así «se convertiría nuestra religión en una esclavitud». (GE 59)
Debemos reconocer que “El primado lo tienen las virtudes teologales, que tienen a Dios como objeto y motivo. Y en el centro está la caridad. San Pablo dice que lo que cuenta de verdad es «la fe que actúa por el amor» (Ga 5,6). Estamos llamados a cuidar atentamente la caridad: «El que ama ha cumplido el resto de la ley […] por eso la plenitud de la ley es el amor» (Rm 13,8.10). «Porque toda la ley se cumple en una sola frase, que es: Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo» (Ga 5,14).
El Papa Francisco termina este capítulo con una breve oración: “¡Que el Señor libere a la Iglesia de estas nuevas formas de gnosticismo y pelagianismo que la agobian y bloquean su progreso en el camino de la santidad!” (GE 62)

Enemies to holiness
In Chapter Two of “The Call to Holiness”, Pope Francis writes of “two subtle enemies to holiness.” The chapter begins with consideration manifestation of two ancient but persistent heresies in the Church, Gnosticism and Pelagianism. This chapter is not about the history of the two heresies, but ways that each may be seen in the Church today. Pope Francis prepares us for “another way” and that is the law of love, seen in Jesus himself.
With respect for the Scriptures and Church tradition, Pope Francis expresses concern that “some groups of Christians give excessive importance to certain rules, customs or ways of acting.” (GE 58) These can be burdensome: “Saint Thomas Aquinas reminded us that the precepts added to the Gospel by the Church should be imposed with moderation ‘lest the conduct of the faithful become burdensome’, for then our religion would become a form of servitude.” (GE 59)
We need to recognize that, “The primacy belongs to the theological virtues, which have God as their object and motive. At the center is charity. Saint Paul says that what truly counts is “faith working through love” (Gal 5:6). We are called to make every effort to preserve charity: “The one who loves another has fulfilled the law… for love is the fulfilment of the law” (Rom 13:8.10). “For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself’” (Gal 5:14). (GE 60)
Pope Francis ends this chapter with a brief prayer: “May the Lord set the Church free from these new forms of Gnosticism and Pelagianism that weigh her down and block her progress along the path to holiness!” (GE 62)
