Elegir a emigrar
Un migrante es alguien que ha elegido dejar su tierra natal y aún no ha establecido una patria elegida. El migrante se va por peligro, desesperanza económica o por la promesa de oportunidad. A menudo, el migrante tiene la esperanza y la intención de regresar a casa. El migrante es móvil, ya que busca establecerse en una nueva tierra. Incluso con un empleo estable y una residencia establecida, es posible que uno nunca se sienta sinceramente como en casa en la nueva tierra.
Cuando mis abuelos celebraron su 50 aniversario de bodas, sus hijos se juntaron para comprarles boletos a Irlanda para ver la tierra y las familias que cada uno había dejado casi sesenta años antes. Mi abuelo tenía lágrimas en los ojos al saber que podía ver a su amada Irlanda, pero mi abuela se negó a ir y dijo: “¿Por qué querría ir allí? Me fui y no tengo ningún deseo de ir allí”. Nunca fueron a Irlanda. Mi abuelo era el “migrante”; y mi Abuela, la “inmigrante”.
Gente tiene un espectro de sentimientos acerca de su patria natal y su nueva patria. Para algunos, la nueva tierra es la “tierra prometida” donde el migrante rápidamente establece lazos con el nuevo hogar. Este es el inmigrante. Otros luchan con las costumbres, la cultura y la forma de vida en la nueva tierra. Emocionalmente siguen siendo personas sin hogar, “migrantes”, el “arameo errante”.
Las comparaciones de la migración de personas hoy con las migraciones pasadas son útiles, pero hay factores únicos en el trabajo en la sociedad que el Papa Benedicto XVI llamó nuestra atención en “Caritas in veritate”. La evangelización y la enseñanza del Evangelio están y estarán afectadas por esta migración. Es imperativo que el ministerio a las personas de movilidad sea creativo, desafiante y dador de vida. El migrante confía en que la vida será mejor lejos de la violencia y la desesperanza de su propia nación. Que las naciones receptoras tengan la gracia de ser generosas en ayudar a los más abandonados del mundo.

Choosing to emigrate
A migrant is someone who has chosen to leave his or her native land and has not yet established a chosen homeland. The migrant leaves because of danger, economic hopelessness or for the promise of opportunity. Often the migrant has hope and intention of returning home. The migrant is mobile, as he or she seeks to settle in a new land. Even with stable employment and established residence, one may never sincerely feel at home in the new land.
When my grandparents celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, their children got together to buy them tickets to Ireland to see the land and families that each had left almost sixty years before. Grandpa had tears in his eyes knowing that he could see his beloved Ireland, but Grandma refused to go as she said, “Why would I want to go there? I left and have no desire to go there.” They never went to Ireland. Grandpa was the “migrant”; Grandma, the “immigrant”.
People have a spectrum of feelings about their native homeland and their new homeland. For some, the new land is the “promised land” where the migrant quickly establishes ties to the new home. This is the immigrant. Others struggle with customs, culture and the way of life in the new land. Emotionally they remain people without a home, “migrants”, the “wandering Aramean.”
Comparisons of the migration of people today with past migrations are helpful, but there are unique factors at work in society that Pope Benedict XVI called to our attention in “Caritas in veritate.” Evangelization and the teaching of the Gospel are and will be affected by this migration. It is imperative that Ministry to people of mobility be creative, challenging and life giving. The migrant trusts that life will be better away from the violence and hopelessness of their own nation. May receiving nations have the grace to be generous in helping the most abandoned of the world.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
