Parece que siempre me estoy presentando. “Hola, me llamo padre Miguel, un misionero redentorista”. En mis primeros diez años como sacerdote, solo tuve que presentarme tres veces. Mi primera asignación fue a la parroquia de San José en Wichita, KS. Fui pastor asociado, director de jóvenes, maestro y entrenador en la Escuela Secundaria Bishop Carrol. Estuve allí durante tres años. Luego, fui pastor asociado en la parroquia San Alfonso en Brooklyn Center, MN. Trabajé con jóvenes y el programa de educación religiosa. Luego, fui pastor asociado en la parroquia de St. Joseph en Denver, CO. Una vez más, trabajé principalmente con jóvenes. En cada comunidad, yo era parte de una parroquia y de una comunidad redentorista. Durante siete años, fui director de vocaciones redentorista, viajando constantemente por el Medio Oeste respondiendo a preguntas de jóvenes que querían saber qué significaba ser redentorista. Fue un tiempo de presentaciones constantes y preguntas sobre la vida religiosa y el sacerdocio.
Después de ser director de vocaciones, conocí el ministerio hispano en nuestra iniciativa juvenil Redentorista, Casa San Alfonso en Denver. En los años de Casa San Alfonso, aprendí español, escuché las historias de inmigrantes de todas las generaciones, fui a los tribunales de inmigración, tribunales civiles y abogué por los derechos de los inmigrantes. Ofrecí misas en comunidades sin sacerdotes de habla hispana en todo el estado. Organicé y participé en retiros, y celebré las alegres celebraciones de fe: cumpleaños, fiestas, graduaciones y días de memoria de nuestros seres queridos difuntos.
Luego, después de veinte años como sacerdote, comencé a predicar misiones parroquiales. No lo sabía en ese momento, pero a partir de ese momento, me quedé “sin hogar”. Yo no era un vagabundo en las calles, pero durante seis años, rara vez estuve en un lugar por más de dos semanas. Prediqué misiones bilingües en 120 pueblos en quince estados. Los últimos cuatro años en misiones parroquiales, pasé los veranos en Oregón dirigiendo programas sacramentales para trabajadores agrícolas migrantes.
A medida que me comprometí más en el ministerio hispano, me convertí en un trabajador temporal en la iglesia. Hubo algunas ocasiones en las que pasé varios meses, incluso algunos años en un lugar, pero mi trabajo en esas comunidades me involucró en una relación a corto plazo con parroquias particulares. Incluso cuando pasé varios años en una diócesis o en una comunidad redentorista, rara vez pasé más de tres meses sirviendo a una comunidad parroquial. O me identifico con el apóstol Pablo o simplemente con los trabajadores migrantes que encuentro en las comunidades rurales.

“Hello, I am Padre Migrante.”
It seems that I am always introducing myself. “Hello, I am Fr. Mike, a Redemptorist missionary.” In my first ten years as a priest, I only had to introduce myself three times. My first assignment was to St. Joseph’s parish in Wichita, KS. I was associate pastor, youth director, teacher and coach at Bishop Carrol High School. I was there for three years. Then, I was associate pastor at St. Alphonsus parish in Brooklyn Center, MN. I worked with youth and the religious education program. Then, I was associate pastor at St. Joseph’s parish in Denver, CO. Again, working mostly with youth. In each community, I was part of a parish and a Redemptorist community. For seven years, I was Redemptorist vocation director, constantly traveling around the Midwest answering questions of young men wanting to know what it meant to be a Redemptorist. It was a time of constant introductions and addressing questions about religious life and priesthood.
After being vocation director, I was introduced to immigrant ministry in our Redemptorist youth initiative, Casa San Alfonso in Denver. In the years of Casa San Alfonso, I learned Spanish, listened to the stories of immigrants of every generation, went to immigration courts, civil courts and advocated for immigrant rights. I offered Masses in communities without Spanish speaking priests around the state. I organized and participated in retreats, and celebrated the joyful celebrations of faith: birthdays, feasts, graduations and days of remembering our departed loved ones.
Then after twenty years as a priest, I began preaching bilingual missions. I did not know it at the time, but from that time on, I became “homeless”. I wasn’t a vagabond on the streets, but for six years, I rarely was in a place for more than two weeks. I preached bilingual missions in 120 towns in fifteen states. The last four years on parish missions, I spent the summers in Oregon running sacramental programs for migrant farmworkers.
As I became more engaged in Hispanic ministry, I have become a seasonal worker in the church. There were a few times when, I spent several months, even a few years in one place, but my work in those communities involved me in short term relationship with particular parishes. Even when I spent several years in a diocese or a Redemptorist community, I rarely spent more than three months serving any parish community. I either identify myself with the apostle Paul or simply with the migrant workers that I meet in rural communities.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
