Make disciples of all nations / Hagan discípulos de todas las naciones

Make disciples of all nations / Hagan discípulos de todas las naciones

Make disciples of all nations

On the day of the Ascension, Jesus said to the Eleven, “Go, make disciples of all nations.” His message is not for the chosen people of the Old Testament. It is not for many people. It is for all nations.

There was a Hispanic student group on campus called “EsTuDios”. It means studies, but as Catholics it also meant He is your God. There was an international student, not hispanic, who often came to EsTuDios events. He asked if I would go to his baptism on Holy Saturday night. I would not miss it. When he was baptized, the priest said, “I baptize you, Mohammed, in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” As he was confirmed, he took the name, “Francis”. Mohammed was from Iraq, but at his college, he felt most at home with the group, EsTuDios.

Pope Benedict XVI said, “It is not by proselytizing that the Church grows, but ‘by attraction’.” Please note that those who attracted our friend, Mohammed, were students. They were typical students, a lot of fun, but he saw in their friendship, faith. Making disciples is not about teaching doctrine and catechism, but about entering into a relationship. There was only one commandment that Jesus gave his disciples, “Love one another as I have loved you.” When such love is shown, we truly can make disciples of all nations.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
