“Yo soy la puerta”
Jesús dice en el evangelio de hoy: “Les aseguro que yo soy la puerta de las ovejas”. Siguiendo la imagen, el portero es Dios, y Dios abre la puerta al pastor ya su rebaño. Después de la Resurrección, Jesús le dijo a Pedro tres veces: “Apacienta mis ovejas”. Claramente pasó el papel de pastor a Pedro y los discípulos. Así como Jesús era la puerta, también lo eran ellos. Como pastores, los sacerdotes y los obispos no son los porteros, sino que representan la puerta que da la bienvenida a los fieles a la salvación.
A través de Jesús, la salvación está abierta a todas las personas. Aquellos a quienes Jesús dedicó más su atención fueron los pobres, los hambrientos, los leprosos, los ciegos, los pecadores, los samaritanos y los marginados. Nunca excluyó a los más abandonados de la sociedad. Por eso, desde el Concilio Vaticano II hasta hoy, cada Papa enfatiza que tenemos una opción preferencial por los pobres. El Papa Francisco dice que “la opción preferencial por los pobres debe traducirse principalmente en una atención religiosa privilegiada y prioritaria”. (EG 200) Esto va en contra de las prioridades de la cultura moderna, “En la cultura predominante, el primer lugar está ocupado por lo exterior, lo inmediato, lo visible, lo rápido, lo superficial, lo provisorio.” (EG 62)
Como pastores, debemos acoger a las ovejas a la salvación dada por Cristo. Lamentablemente, la impresión de mucha gente es que algunas reglas para la recepción de los sacramentos son barreras para muchos, especialmente para los pobres. Necesitamos reconocer que no somos guardias de la puerta, sino pastores que conducen las ovejas a través de la puerta, que es Jesús, el Redentor.

“I am the gate”
Jesus says in today’s gospel, “Amen, amen, I say to you, I am the gate for the sheep.” Following the image, the gatekeeper is God, and God opens the gate for the shepherd and his flock. After the Resurrection Jesus told Peter three times, “Feed my sheep.” He clearly passed the role of shepherd to Peter and the disciples. As Jesus was the gate, so were they. As pastors, priests and bishops are not the gatekeepers, but they represent as the gate that welcomes the faithful to salvation.
Through Jesus, salvation is open to all people. Those whom Jesus devoted his attention to most were the poor, the hungry, the leper, the blind, the sinner, the Samaritan and the outcast. He never excluded those most abandoned in society. It is for this reason from the Second Vatican Council until today, every Pope emphasizes that we have a preferential option for the poor. Pope Francis says that “our preferential option for the poor must mainly translate into a privileged and preferential religious care.” (EG 200) This is counter to the priorities of modern culture, “In the prevailing culture, priority is given to the outward, the immediate, the visible, the quick, the superficial and the provisional.” (EG 62)
As shepherds, we are to welcome the sheep to the salvation given by Christ. Sadly, the impression of many people is that some rules for the reception of the sacraments are barriers to many, especially the poor. We need to recognize that we are not guards at the gate, but shepherds who lead the sheep through the gate, who is Jesus, the Redeemer.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
