Conoce tu propia bondad
Durante los últimos dos días, escribí sobre reconocer el bien en los demás. ¿Cómo se puede ver el bien en los demás cuando no ven el bien en sí mismos? Recuerda que Jesús dijo: “Ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo”. Esto supone que te amas a ti mismo. Con demasiada frecuencia, entre las personas que profesan la fe en Jesús y participan en las prácticas externas de nuestra fe católica, escucho profesión de fe en la misericordia y el amor de Dios, pero cuando la gente entra en un lugar de culto, se vuelve solemne e incluso triste. La reverencia y el asombro se dan apropiadamente al dador de vida, belleza, esperanza y alegría, pero ¿por qué no más alegría?
El Papa Francisco escribe: “Una de las tentaciones más serias que ahogan el fervor y la audacia es la conciencia de derrota que nos convierte en pesimistas quejosos y desencantados con cara de vinagre.” (EG. 85)
La Semana Santa más hermosa de mi vida tuvo lugar en el estado de Oaxaca, México. El pueblo donde estaba tenía una población de unas 1.000 personas. La iglesia puede haber sentado a 500 personas. Con la multitud de pie, tal vez 800 estuvieron presentes para la Misa de la Vigilia Pascual. La Semana Santa comenzó el Domingo de Ramos y hubo servicios diarios, catequesis para los niños, cada mañana los hombres rezaron las estaciones de la cruz en las estaciones al aire libre. Las mujeres ofrecieron la oración de la mañana en la Iglesia mientras los hombres rezaban las estaciones. Escuché confesiones de seis a ocho horas cada día. El Jueves Santo y el Viernes Santo tenían varios servicios. La solemnidad de la semana cedió el sábado por la mañana mientras mucha gente se preparaba para la Vigilia Pascual y el domingo.
El Sábado Santo, las mujeres preparaban los frijoles, el pozole, las salsas, las tortillas y los postres. Los hombres mataron pollos, cerdos, cabras y ovejas. Prepararon los escenarios, las casetas y el entretenimiento para después de la Vigilia. Los jóvenes salieron a traer flores silvestres, adornando la iglesia y preparando la música para las Misas y la fiesta.
La Misa comenzó en la oscuridad. Después del encendido del cirio pascual, la luz de las velas iluminó nuestro servicio hasta el canto del Gloria. Cuando se encendieron las luces, la belleza y el olor de las flores deleitó los sentidos. Los aleluyas resonaron a través de la iglesia, y al final de la Misa, cuando salimos de la iglesia, los fuegos artificiales llenaron el cielo. Al menos durante esa semana, la alegría externa de la fiesta reflejó lo que enseñamos sobre la alegría del Evangelio. Oro para que más personas resistan la tentación del derrotismo que está tan presente no solo en el mundo, sino también dentro de nuestras iglesias.

Recognize your own goodness
For the past two days, I wrote about recognizing good in others. How can one see good in others when they do not see good in themselves? Remember that Jesus said, “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” This assumes that you love yourself. Too often amongst people who profess faith in Jesus and participate in the external practices of our Catholic faith, I hear profession of faith in the mercy and love of God, but when the people enter a place of worship, they become solemn and even sad. Reverence and awe are properly given to giver of life, beauty, hope and joy, but why not more joy.
Pope Francis writes, One of the more serious temptations which stifles boldness and zeal is a defeatism which turns us into querulous and disillusioned pessimists, “sourpusses”. (EG. 85)
The most beautiful Easter of my life took place in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. The village I was in had a population of about 1,000 people. The church may have seated 500 people. With the standing room only crowd, maybe 800 were present for the Easter Vigil Mass. Holy Week began on Palm Sunday and there were daily services, catechesis for the children, each morning the men prayed stations of the cross at outdoor stations. The women offered morning prayer in the Church while the men prayed the stations. I heard confessions for six to eight hours each day. Holy Thursday and Good Friday had several services. The solemnity of the week gave way on Saturday morning as many people prepared for the Easter Vigil and Sunday.
On Holy Saturday, the women prepared the beans, pozole, salsas, tortillas and deserts. Men butchered the chickens, pigs, goats and sheep. They set up the stages, booths, and the entertainment for after the Vigil and for Sunday. The youth went out to bring wildflowers, decorating the church and preparing the music for the Masses and the fiesta.
The Mass began in darkness. After the Easter candle was lit, candlelight illuminated our service until the singing of the Gloria. When the lights went on, the beauty and the smell of the flowers delighted the senses. The alleluias echoed through the church, and at the conclusion of the Mass, as we left the church, the fireworks filled the sky. At least for that week, the external joy of the feast reflected what we teach about the joy of the Gospel. I pray that more people resist the temptation to defeatism that is so present not only in the world, but within our churches.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
