Ver el bien en cada persona
Algunos respondieron a los blogs en los últimos dos días. Escribí que viajé a lo largo de la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México el verano pasado visitando refugios y conociendo a muchos migrantes que esperaban una audiencia sobre solicitudes de asilo o se preparaban para tratar de entrar a Estados Unidos después de que todos los caminos legales fallaron. La gente nos contó sus historias. Muchos se abrieron a nosotros de maneras que no esperaba. Ciertamente, hubo momentos en los que no manejamos bien las entrevistas. Preguntamos qué motivó a las personas a dejar sus hogares, familias y países. Los migrantes y refugiados nos hablaron de su desesperación, pero lo que me asombraba constantemente era su esperanza. Creían que los peligros que enfrentaban en su viaje por México, mientras viajaban en la “Bestia”, la falta de comida y alojamiento seguro. Todavía creían que era mejor para ellos esperar un futuro mejor que vivir en la desesperación de sus países.
Conozco los reclamos antiinmigrantes sobre las personas en la frontera, pero no conocí a una sola persona que hizo el papel de matón, pandillero o criminal. Conocí a personas que hacían cosas que eran ilegales y perjudiciales, en particular para ellos mismos, pero simplemente intentaban sobrevivir. Era muy difícil encontrar a alguien a quien temer u odiar.
Estoy feliz por tener esos meses para obtener perspectivas diferentes de la vida. Ver el bien o ver el mal en otra persona es una elección. No se basa realmente en la otra persona. Cuanto más y más veía la desesperación, más veía la bondad y la esperanza de las personas en apuros. Necesitamos honrar el coraje que se necesita para creer que las cosas pueden mejorar. Los migrantes no tardaron mucho en pasar de los sentimientos de desesperación a volver a sentirse bien y seguros de que tendrán una vida mejor. Puede ser simplemente tomar una ducha, usar ropa limpia, tener una buena comida. Los albergues no eran hoteles de lujo, y la comida puede ser desabrida, pero para los migrantes eran lugares de seguridad y les devolvían la esperanza.
Han pasado seis meses desde que terminamos el estudio de la frontera, pero después de caminar con los más abandonados del mundo, es más fácil ver el bien a mi alrededor y estar agradecido por esa bondad. Oren por los desesperados del mundo, pero también tómense un momento para ver lo bueno en las personas que los rodean, especialmente en aquellos que pueden haberlos molestado antes.

Seeing good in people
Several people have responded to the blogs over the past couple days. I wrote that I traveled all along the United States / Mexico border last summer visiting shelters and meeting many migrants waiting for a hearing on asylum petitions or preparing to try to enter the United States after all legal paths failed. People told us their stories. Many opened themselves up to us in ways that I did not expect. Certainly, there were times when we did not handle interviews well. We asked about what motivated people to leave their homes, families and countries. The migrants and refugees told us about their desperation, but what constantly amazed me was their hope. They believed that the dangers that they faced as they traveled through Mexico, as they rode the “Bestia” (the freight trains), and the lack of food and safe lodging. Still they believed that it was better for them to hope for a better future than to live in the desperation of their nations.
I know the anti-immigrant claims about the people at the border, but I did not meet a single person who fit the role of thug, gangster or criminal. I did meet people who did things that were illegal and harmful particularly to themselves, but they were simply trying to survive. It was very hard to find someone to fear or to hate.
I am happy for having those months to gain some different perspectives on life. Seeing good or seeing evil in another person is a choice. It is not really based on the other person. The more and more that I saw desperation, the more I saw the goodness and the hope of people in distress. We need to honor the courage that it takes to believe that things can get better. It did not take much for the migrants to move from feelings of desperation to once again feel whole and confident that they will have a better life. It may just be taking a shower, wearing clean clothes, having a good meal. The shelters were not luxury hotels, and the food may not have looked good, but for the migrants they were places of safety and restored the hope.
It is six months since we finished our study of the border, but after walking with some of the most abandoned of the world, it is easier to see good around me and to be grateful for that goodness. Please pray for the desperate of the world, but also take a moment to see the good in people around you, especially those who may have bothered you before.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
