“There are no bad boys”/ “No hay chicos malos”
“No hay chicos malos”, el P. Flanagan
Ayer escribí sobre mi experiencia de seis meses en la frontera entre México y Estados Unidos y nunca conocer a una mala persona. También reconocí que algunas personas eran groseras, pero si tenemos el coraje y la fe para creer que cada persona está hecha a imagen y semejanza de Dios, reconoceremos que las buenas personas pueden ser defectuosos, groseros, enojados y difíciles de aguantar, pero eso no los hace malos.
Soy de Omaha. Como honestamente no conocí a matones, mafiosos o malos, elegir ver la bondad en cada persona, hizo mi viaje por la frontera no solamente placentero, sino que también me hizo querer ayudar a las personas al margen de la sociedad y la iglesia. Recordé al p. Flanagan, el fundador de Boys Town. Recuerdo que él dijo, “no hay chicos malos”. La oración completa era: “No hay chicos malos. Solo hay mal ambiente, mal entrenamiento, mal ejemplo, mal pensamiento”. Creó un mejor ambiente para los niños con problemas. En Boys Town, los niños tenían un entorno mejor y más seguro. Recibieron buena formación, buen ejemplo y un ambiente seguro.
En Omaha, estábamos orgullosos de Boys Town y del testimonio del Padre Flanagan. Su extraordinario compromiso con los niños y jóvenes inspiró a muchos a cuidar de los marginados, los inmigrantes, los jóvenes con problemas. Al considerar a aquellos que no tienen un lugar al que llamar hogar, ningún país que los reciba, ningún consuelo en nuestras iglesias, veamos el bien en los demás. Cuando Jesús envió a los Apóstoles, los envió a: “Vayan y hagan que todos los pueblos sean mis discípulos”. (Mt. 28:19) Como dice el Papa Francisco, “Nadie está excluido”. (EG. 3) Ver el bien en la gente de todas las naciones.

“There are no bad boys”, Fr. Flanagan
Yesterday, I wrote about my experience of six months on the Mexico / United States border and never meeting a bad person. I also recognized that some people were rude, but if we have the courage and the faith to believe that every person is made in the image and likeness of God, we will recognize that good people may be flawed, rude, angry and difficult to live with, but that does not make them bad.
I am from Omaha. As I honestly did not meet any thugs, gangsters or bad people, choosing to see the goodness in each person made my trip on the border, not only more enjoyable, it made me want to help people on the fringes of society and church more. I recalled Fr. Flanagan, the founder of Boys Town. I remembered his saying that “there are no bad boys.” The entire sentence was, “There are no bad boys. There is only bad environment, bad training, bad example, bad thinking.” He created a better environment for troubled boys. In Boys Town, boys had a better, safer environment. They received good training, good example and a safe environment.
In Omaha, we were proud of Boys Town and the witness of Fr. Flanagan. His extraordinary commitment to the children and youth inspired many to care for the outcast, the migrant, the troubled youth. As we consider those who have no place to call home, no country to receive them, no comfort in our churches, let us see the good in others. When Jesus sent the Apostles out, he sent them to, “Go and make disciples of all nations.” (Mt. 28:19) As Pope Francis says, “No one is excluded.” (EG. 3) See the good in people of all nations.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
