Apreciación de la Misa
Considerando la experiencia de la Misa, un hombre habló sobre tener una mayor apreciación de la Misa dominical después de dos años de la pandemia de COVID. Antes de la pandemia, asistía regularmente a Misa dominical, pero en la ocasión en que no podía ir a Misa, se sentía culpable por faltar a Misa, incluso cuando tenía una razón seria para faltar a Misa. Dijo que había momentos en que Misa no era disponible durante la pandemia y lo veía en la televisión o en una computadora, pero a menudo le resultaba difícil prestar atención y no era muy satisfactorio. Durante nueve meses al año, rara vez podía asistir a Misa durante varias cosechas de frutas y verduras. Después de la última cosecha, tenía unos tres meses y habló de lo agradecido que estaba por poder asistir a misa con regularidad. Martin participó en misas de campamento durante la cosecha de cerezas durante cinco años. Me agradeció cada año, diciéndome que esas misas eran lo más destacado de sus veranos. La cosecha en The Dalles, Oregón, se convirtió en su época favorita del año, ya que celebraba Misa en su campamento.

Appreciation of the Mass
Reflecting on the experience of Mass, a man spoke about having a greater appreciation of Sunday Mass after two years of the COVID pandemic. Before the pandemic, he regularly attended Sunday Mass, but on the occasion when he could not go to Mass, he felt guilty for missing Mass, even when he had a serious reason for missing Mass. He said that there were times when Mass was not available during the pandemic and he would watch on TV or on a computer, but often found it difficult to pay attention and it was not very fulfilling. When able to attend Mass in person again, while it was still strange keeping distance from others, he was more aware of his joy and being with others sharing faith again. He said, “I don’t think that I will ever feel guilty for missing Mass again, but I certainly feel the loss of not being able to share my faith with other parishioners.” The Mass has taken on more meaning and he recognizes the grace of praying with fellow believers.
Years ago, a similar expression of joy in celebrating faith with fellow Catholics by a Martin, a migrant farm worker. For nine months of the year, he was infrequently able to attend Mass during various harvests of fruit and vegetables. After the last harvest, he had about three months and he spoke of how grateful he was for being able to attend Mass regularly. Martin participated in camp Masses during the cherry harvest for five years. He thanked me each year, telling me that those Masses we the highlight of his summers. The harvest in The Dalles, Oregon became his favorite time of the year, as he would have Mass celebrated in his camp.
I hope that we can change our consideration of Sunday Mass. Rather than attending Mass out of a sense of obligation, would that we attend Mass grateful for the opportunity to share our faith with fellow Catholics. My hope is not only based on reducing the sense of guilt, but on the value of coming together with others of the faith to worship and increase our faith. Also, the moments before and after the Mass to recognize our friendships is very important.
Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
