Nuestras puertas están abiertas
La Iglesia «en salida» es una Iglesia con las puertas abiertas. (EG. 46)
En 1993, la archidiócesis de Denver se preparó para un millón de visitantes que vendrían de todo el mundo para la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud. Durante más de un año hubo reuniones mensuales para preparar a los líderes jóvenes para el evento. Un día, nuestro grupo de jóvenes quería ver la iglesia de una parroquia suburbana que albergaba una reunión. Cuando fuimos a la iglesia, las puertas estaban cerradas. Nuestro grupo estaba impactado. Dijeron: “San José siempre está abierto, y estamos en una parte difícil de la ciudad”.
En los días posteriores, varios jóvenes hablaron de las “puertas cerradas”. En San José, nuestras puertas estaban cerradas después de las 9:00 pm, pero de 6:00 am a 9:00 pm estaban abiertas. Varios de los jóvenes comentaron sobre pasar de visita después de la escuela. Otra dijo que se detuvo en la iglesia para orar por su madre que lucha contra el cáncer. La idea de que las puertas de la iglesia no estuvieran abiertas decepcionó a muchos. La “puerta abierta” significó algo más que un lugar de oración. Era una señal de que la iglesia estaba ahí para todos, en todo momento.
Cuando el Papa Francisco dice que la Iglesia está “abierta”, nos llama a ser acogedores con todo el mundo, especialmente con los que están en la “periferia”, en los márgenes de la humanidad. ¿Estamos verdaderamente abiertos? ¿Hay gente fuera del abrazo de la Iglesia? Conocemos la lucha de gente viviendo en matrimonios no reconocidos por la Iglesia, gente que ha tenido malas experiencias con líderes religiosos, y otras condiciones que conducen a la exclusión. Nuestra parcialidad hacia muchos deja a muchos otros sintiéndose fuera de la vida de la Iglesia.
El Papa Francisco reconoce los desafíos de la evangelización. Él escribe: Salir hacia los demás para llegar a las periferias humanas no implica correr hacia el mundo sin rumbo y sin sentido. Muchas veces es más bien detener el paso, dejar de lado la ansiedad para mirar a los ojos y escuchar, o renunciar a las urgencias para acompañar al que se quedó al costado del camino. (EG. 46)
Mientras buscamos información sobre las condiciones de los migrantes a lo largo de la frontera entre EE. UU. y México, no estamos corriendo sin rumbo para llegar a los migrantes. Existe la necesidad de observar y de escuchar. Durante el proceso, buscamos oportunidades para atender las necesidades pastorales de los refugiados y migrantes. Cuando se trata de migración global, no hay soluciones fáciles. En el mejor de los casos, tenemos soluciones parciales e incluso esas soluciones cambian a medida que cambian las circunstancias de la migración.
Si bien el movimiento de personas afecta a naciones, comunidades y familias, nuestros esfuerzos son humanitarios. ¿Cómo podemos amar a nuestro prójimo? ¿Cómo podemos reconocer a Cristo en todos los aspectos de nuestra vida? El objetivo de todos nuestros esfuerzos no es la perfección, sino la búsqueda del amor. El nuevo mandamiento de Jesús es nuestro fundamento: “Ámense unos a los otros como yo los he amado”. (Juan 15:12)

Our doors are open
A Church which “goes forth” is a Church whose doors are open. (EG. 46)
In 1993, the archdiocese of Denver prepared for a million visitors who would come from all over the world for World Youth Day. For over one year there were monthly meetings to prepare youth leaders for the event. One day our youth group wanted to see the church of a suburban parish hosting a meeting. When we went to the church, the doors were locked. Our group was shocked. They said, “St. Joe´s is always open, and we are in a rough part of town.”
In the days afterwards, several young people talked about the “locked doors.” At St. Joe´s, our doors were locked after 9:00 pm, but from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm they were open. Several of the young people commented on stopping in for a visit after school. Another said she stopped at the church to pray for her mother struggling with cancer. The idea of the doors of the church not being open disappointed many. The “open door” meant more than just being a place of prayer. It was a sign that the church was there for everyone, at every moment.
When Pope Francis says that the Church is “open”, he calls on us to be welcoming to all people, especially those on the “periphery”, on the fringes of humanity. Are we truly open? Are there people outside the embrace of our Church? We know the struggles of people living in marriages not recognized by the Church, those who have had poor experiences with religious leaders and teachers, and other conditions that lead to exclusion. Our partiality to many, leave many others feeling outside of the life of the Church.
Pope Francis recognizes the challenges of evangelization. He writes, “Going out to others in order to reach the fringes of humanity does not mean rushing out aimlessly into the world. Often it is better simply to slow down, to put aside our eagerness in order to see and listen to others, to stop rushing from one thing to another and to remain with someone who has faltered along the way.” (EG. 46)
As we seek information on the conditions of migrants along the U.S. – Mexico border, we are not rushing out aimlessly to reach migrants. There is the need to observe and to listen. During the process, we seek opportunities to serve pastoral needs of refugees and migrants. When it comes to global migration there are no easy solutions. At best, we have partial solutions and even those solutions change as the circumstances of migration change.
While the movement of people affects nations, communities, and families, our efforts are humanitarian. How can we love our neighbor? How can we recognize Christ in all aspects of our lives? The goal of all of our efforts is not perfection, but the pursuit of love. The new commandment of Jesus is our foundation, “Love one another as I have loved you.” (Jn 15:12)

May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
