Unexpected Danger / Peligro inesperado
Peligro inesperado en nuestro viaje a la frontera
Pedí a la gente que orara por nuestra seguridad como el P. Leo Moctezuma y yo viajamos por la frontera entre México y Estados Unidos. Honestamente, nunca nos hemos sentido inseguros. La mayoría de las personas que trabajan en los albergues nos alientan que la violencia hacia los cuidadores y los voluntarios es muy baja. Esta mañana tuvimos un peligro común, pero muy real.
Salíamos de nuestra casa redentorista en Torreón, Coahuila y a tres cuadras de la iglesia alguien nos atropelló a gran velocidad. Golpeó la puerta trasera del lado del pasajero. Estaba mirando para otro lado y nunca vi venir el auto. Afortunadamente, no me lastimé, un moretón del cinturón de seguridad me mantuvo en el lugar, pero nada más. Me revisaron una paramédica. Me sentí bien una hora después, pero cuando me di cuenta de que si el accidente hubiera sido una fracción de segundo antes, habría golpeado mi puerta y podría haber sido mucho peor. Me encontré temblando ante la idea.
Parece tan fácil dar por sentadas nuestras vidas. Esto podría pasar en cualquier calle, en cualquier ciudad. Mi día fue un día de gracia. Llegué a apreciar la vida mucho más. Le dije a un amigo que perdí una de mis vidas hoy. Dijo, no busques renunciar a tu segunda vida.
Además, recibí una gran noticia esta noche. Mi sobrina Jennifer dio a luz a una hermosa niña esta noche. Otra razón para estar agradecido. Soy tío otra vez.

Unexpected danger on our trip to border
I asked for people to pray for our safety as Fr. Leo Moctezuma and I travel along the Mexico – U.S. border. Honestly, we have never felt unsafe. Most of the people working in shelters encourage us that violence towards the caregivers and the volunteers is very low. This morning we had a common, but very real danger.
We were driving out of our Redemptorist house in Torreon, Coahuila and three blocks from the church someone smashed into us as a significant speed. He hit the rear door on the passenger side of car. I was looking the other way and never saw the car coming. Fortunately, I was not hurt, a bruise from the seat belt holding me in place, but nothing more. I did get checked out be paramedics. I felt fine. An hour later, when I realized that if the accident had been a split second earlier, he would have hit my door and it could have been much worse. I found myself shaking at the thought.
It seems so easy to take our lives for granted. This could happen on any street, in any city. My day was a day of grace. I came to appreciate life so much more. I told a friend that I lost one of my lives today. He said, don’t look to give up your second life.
Also, I received great news this evening. My niece Jennifer gave birth to a beautiful baby girl tonight. Another reason to be grateful. I am an uncle again.
Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
