Padre Migrante: No program serves the needs of all – Buscando “otra manera”
Durante los últimos cuatro días, el Padre Migrante abordó los obstáculos que enfrentan los pobres para recibir atención espiritual. El Papa Francisco llama a la falta de atención espiritual, “la peor discriminación que sufren los pobres”. (EG. 200) Algunos pueden llamar a esto una hipérbole, pero la parte más difícil de mi experiencia en el ministerio campesino ha sido lograr que pastores y educadores religiosos consideren prácticas pastorales que crean dificultades para las personas al margen de la vida de la Iglesia. Con todos los demás cambios que están ocurriendo dentro del ministerio pastoral debido a una pandemia, estamos en un momento de oportunidad para reinventar la catequesis. El Papa Juan Pablo II dijo que necesitamos “una Nueva Evangelización, nueva en su ardor, métodos y expresión“.
Buscando “otra manera”
A principios de este año, esperaba que nuestras vidas no estuvieran tan dominadas por COVID como el año pasado. Ahora, parece que las nubes de COVID se vuelven más oscuras una vez más. Todavía existe una gran incertidumbre sobre lo que puede ser una nueva normalidad. Algunas personas esperan volver a la forma en que siempre hemos hecho las cosas. Prefiero lo que dice el Papa Francisco en la “Alegría del Evangelio”. Necesitamos “abandonar la actitud de que ‘siempre lo hemos hecho así'”. (EG. 33) Necesitamos reconocer nuevos caminos. Necesitamos buscar “otro camino”.
En los Hechos de los Apóstoles, la comunidad de creyentes tenía un solo corazón y una sola mente. Si bien la comunidad tenía un solo corazón y una sola mente, todavía había desacuerdos dentro de la Iglesia. Los discípulos estaban divididos sobre cómo recibir a los gentiles en la Iglesia. ¿Debían ser bautizados o primero tenían que circuncidarse y convertirse en judíos antes de ser bautizados? El concilio de Jerusalén tomó una decisión sobre el tema. Enviaron a Pablo y Bernabé a evangelizar a los gentiles diciendo que no deseaban colocar una carga innecesaria sobre los nuevos creyentes.
Necesitamos el espíritu de la Iglesia primitiva para buscar nuevas formas de hacer las cosas. La necesidad más clara de un “nuevo camino” es recibir personas para los sacramentos de la iniciación. COVID nos está mostrando que las reuniones de grupos grandes de personas para clases y programas pueden necesitar modificaciones para satisfacer las nuevas necesidades del mundo. Debemos reconocer que se pueden y se deben hacer excepciones cuando sea necesario. Necesitamos el compromiso de amar a los que son cargados. “Porque mi yugo es suave, y mi carga es ligera”. (Mt 11:30) Comienza con un compromiso a amar. Necesitamos escuchar, comprender, perdonar y buscar el perdón, la paciencia, la justicia y buscar el bienestar del otro.
Los padres son los educadores primarios y principales
Mi primera experiencia como catequista vino en 1965. Era estudiante de primer año en la universidad y tenía una clase de cincuenta niños en quinto grado. La hermana que dirigía el programa nos dijo que NO era nuestro trabajo enseñar la fe a los niños. Ella dijo: “Su trabajo es ayudar a los padres a enseñar la fe a sus hijos”. Se acababa de publicar la Declaración sobre la educación cristiana del Concilio Vaticano II. Dijo que los padres “deben ser reconocidos como los educadores primarios y principales” de sus hijos. (GE, 3)
Esto es aún más claro en el rito del bautismo infantil. A los padres se les hace esta pregunta: “Ustedes, papás que piden el Bautismo para sus hijos, deben darse cuenta de que contraen la obligación de educarlos en la fe, para que, guardando los mandamientos divinos, amen a Dios y a su prójimo, come Cristo nos enseñó. ¿Se dan ustedes cuenta de la obligación que contraen?”

Over the past four days, Padre Migrante addressed the obstacles that the poor face in receiving spiritual attention. Pope Francis calls lack of spiritual attention, “the worst discrimination that the poor suffer.” (EG. 200) Some may call this hyperbole, but the most difficult part of my experience in campesino ministry has been getting pastors and religious educators to consider pastoral practices that create hardships for people on the margins of Church life. With all the other changes taking place within pastoral ministry because of a pandemic, we are in a moment of opportunity to reimagine catechesis. Pope John Paul II said that we need “a New Evangelization, new in its ardor, methods and expression.”
Seeking “another way”
At the beginning of this year, I hoped that our lives would not be so dominated by COVID as last year. Now, it appears that the clouds of COVID are getting darker once again. There is still great uncertainty about what a new normal may be. Some people hope for a return to the ways that we have always done things. I prefer what Pope Francis says in the “Joy of the Gospel”. We need “to abandon the attitude that ‘we have always done it this way’.” (EG. 33) We need to recognize new ways. We need to seek “another way.”
In the Acts of the Apostles, the community of believers was of one heart and one mind. While the community was of one heart and one mind, there still were disagreements within the Church. The disciples were divided on how to receive Gentiles into the Church. Should they be baptized, or did they need first to be circumcised and become Jews before being baptized? It took the council of Jerusalem to decide the issue. They sent Paul and Barnabas to evangelize Gentiles saying that they wished to place no unnecessary burden on the new believers.
We need the spirit of the early Church to seek new ways of doing things. The clearest need for “new way” is in receiving people for the sacraments of initiation. COVID is showing us that large group gatherings of people for classes and programs may need modifying to meet new world needs. We need to recognize that exceptions can and should be made when they are called for. We need a commitment to love those who are burdens. “For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Mt 11:30) It begins with a commitment to love. We need to listen, understand, forgive and seek forgiveness, patience, justice and to seek the genuine wellbeing of the other.
Parents are the primary and principal educators
My first experience as a catechist came in 1965. I was a Freshman in college, and I had a class of fifty children in fifth grade. The sister directing the program told us that it was NOT our job to teach children the faith. She said, “Your job is to help the parents teach the faith to their children.” The Declaration on Christian Education from the Second Vatican Council had just been published. It said that parents “must be recognized as the primary and principal educators” of their children. (Declaration on Christian Education, 3)
This is even more clear in the rite for infant baptism. Parents are asked this question: “You have asked to have your child baptized. In doing so you are accepting the responsibility of training him/her in the practice of the faith. It will be your duty to bring him/her up to keep God’s commandments as Christ taught us, by loving God and our neighbor. Do you clearly understand what you are undertaking?”
