Primer día en Casa San Alfonso
Había un grupo animado de jóvenes en la parroquia de San José. El grupo involucró a muchos jóvenes de secundaria, pero también a varias personas de hasta veinticinco años. El grupo tenía una buena comunidad de mentores a quienes llamábamos “padrinos” para la comunidad juvenil. En el verano de 1991, invitamos a los jóvenes de 18 a 25 años para rezar los jueves. Introducimos al grupo al estilo de oración de Taize en Francia. El grupo inició con seis jóvenes. Dentro de pocas semanas, el grupo creció a quince participantes.
Cuando recibimos permiso de iniciar la casa para jóvenes, rentamos una casa en el barrio. Pedimos al grupo Taize ayudarnos para limpiar la casa y mudar muebles a la Casa el 9 de noviembre, el día de fundación de los Redentoristas en 1732 en Scala, Italia.
Recolectamos muebles usados donados de muchas fuentes. No compramos nada para la casa y tuvimos más donaciones de muebles y cosas para la cocina usados para nuestra casa de los que podíamos usar. Esa mañana casi veinte personas ayudaron a limpiar la casa y nos mudamos a Casa San Alfonso. En la casa, había cuatro dormitorios, tres arriba y uno en el piso principal. La sala del frente iba a ser nuestra capilla, el comedor y la cocina estaban en el medio del primer piso. Una sala estaba delante del comedor. Cerca de las 5:00 pm, ordenamos pizza para el grupo, nuestra primera cena en la Casa. Después de comer, los jóvenes anunciaron que iban a un baile de quinceañera. Cuando se fueron, dijeron que volverían más tarde. Tres de los “padrinos” y tres redentoristas permanecieron en la Casa. Después de lavar los platos, rezamos Completas con nuestros amigos. Nos reímos de la idea de que los jóvenes volvieran después del baile, ya que nuestros amigos se iban a las 10:00 pm.
A las 10:30 pm. llegaron una treintena de jóvenes. Tenían bocadillos, refrescos, un sonido de música y se apoderaron de la casa. Sacaron la mesa y las sillas del comedor. El comedor y la sala del frente tenían un hermoso piso de madera. Comenzó la música y comenzó el baile. P. Patrick dijo: “Casa San Alfonso ha comenzado”. Al día siguiente, dos jóvenes se mudaron a la casa con nosotros y dos más el lunes. Sabíamos que íbamos a aprender lo que significaba “caminar con la juventud” de Casa San Alfonso.
First Day at Casa San Alfonso
We had a vibrant youth group in St. Joseph’s parish. The group involved many high school youth, but also included a number of people up to twenty-five years old. The group had a good community of mentors whom we called “padrinos” to the youth community. In the summer of 1991, we invited the older youth, 18-25 years old, to pray in the style of a monastery in Taize, France. We began with six people. Within a few weeks the group grew to about fifteen participants.
When we received permission to begin the youth house, we rented a house in the barrio and asked our Taize group to help clean the house and move furniture on Nov. 9, 1991. It was a Saturday. The day coincided with the founding date of the Redemptorists in 1732 in Scala, Italy.
We gathered used donated furniture from many sources. We bought very little for the house and had more donations of used furniture and kitchen supplies than we could use. That morning about twenty people helped clean the house and we moved into Casa San Alfonso. In the house, there were four bedrooms, three upstairs and one on the main floor. The front room was to be our chapel, the dining room and kitchen were in the middle of the first floor. A sitting room was past the dining room. Around 5:00 pm we ordered pizza for our work crew, our first meal at the Casa. After eating, the young people announced that they were going to a Quinceañera dance. As they left, they said that they would be back later. Three of the “padrinos” and three Redemptorists remained at the Casa. After cleaning dishes, we prayed Compline (Night Prayer) with our friends. We laughed at the idea that the young people would return after the dance, as our friends left at 10:00 pm.
At 10:30 pm, thirty young people arrived. They had snacks, sodas, a boom-box and they took over the house. They moved the table and chairs out of the dining room. The dining room and front room had a beautiful wood floor. The music began and the dancing began. Fr. Patrick said, “Casa San Alfonso has begun.” The next day two young men moved into the house with us, and two more on Monday. We knew that we were going to learn what it meant to “walk with the youth” of Casa San Alfonso.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
