200: Puesto que esta Exhortación se dirige a los miembros de la Iglesia católica quiero expresar con dolor que la peor discriminación que sufren los pobres es la falta de atención espiritual. La inmensa mayoría de los pobres tiene una especial apertura a la fe; necesitan a Dios y no podemos dejar de ofrecerles su amistad, su bendición, su Palabra, la celebración de los Sacramentos y la propuesta de un camino de crecimiento y de maduración en la fe. La opción preferencial por los pobres debe traducirse principalmente en una atención religiosa privilegiada y prioritaria.
Para todos los que trabajan en cualquier ministerio que toque la vida de los pobres, recomiendo reflexionar sobre esta afirmación de la Alegría del Evangelio. “Quiero expresar con dolor que la peor discriminación que sufren los pobres es la falta de atención espiritual”. Tómese un tiempo para reflexionar sobre su experiencia en los esfuerzos de la Iglesia en el cuidado de los pobres. Que Dios bendiga todos nuestros esfuerzos para aliviar los desafíos que la pobreza presenta a los pobres, pero ¿ponemos tanta atención en las necesidades físicas y económicas que no podemos ofrecer a los pobres su amistad, su bendición, su palabra, la celebración de los sacramentos y un camino de crecimiento y madurez en la fe “?

200: Since this Exhortation is addressed to members of the Catholic Church, I want to say, with regret, that the worst discrimination which the poor suffer is the lack of spiritual care. The great majority of the poor have a special openness to the faith; they need God and we must not fail to offer them his friendship, his blessing, his word, the celebration of the sacraments and a journey of growth and maturity in the faith. Our preferential option for the poor must mainly translate into a privileged and preferential religious care.
For all who work in any ministry that touches the lives of the poor, I recommend reflecting on this statement from the Joy of the Gospel. “I want to say, with regret, that the worst discrimination which the poor suffer is the lack of spiritual care.” Take time to reflect on your experience in efforts of the Church in care for the poor. May God bless all of our efforts to alleviate the challenges that poverty presents to the poor, but do we put so much attention on the physical and economic needs that we fail to offer the poor “his friendship, his blessing, his word, the celebration of the sacraments and a journey of growth and maturity in the faith.”
