“It’s a Good Day”

Yesterday morning, I walked along the Riverwalk in San Antonio. There was a maintenance worker picking up trash along the path. A young woman jogging towards me saw the worker and cried out, “Good morning, Mr. Robert.” He greeted her just as cheerfully. The cheerful greeting and the reply struck me and brought me out of the stressful reflections of the past few months. I was reflecting with some longing for the good days of the past. As I continued on, their joy changed my walk.
I thought of an old Perry Como song that fit the moment, It’s a good day.
Oh it’s a good day, for singing this song
and it’s a good day, for moving along
Yes it’s a good day, how could anything go wrong?
It’s a good day from morning till night.
How can it be a “good day” in time of COVID19?
Six months ago was the first Sunday we began celebrating Mass without a congregation present. Bishops encouraged people to make holy the Lord´s Day in new, personal and safe ways. We live streamed Masses that were said in private. Many who struggled with the obligation of Sunday worship, were surprised to feel a loss in their lives when they could not attend Mass. The novelty of attending Mass through television filled the void for a while. Gradually, Mass is offered with limited participation in most dioceses, but parish life has not yet returned to a sense of normal. We wear masks. Music is limited. We are self-conscious about gathering. Celebrations of sacraments, marriages, feasts and funerals are dramatically curtailed. We come to church for relief from the fears and frustrations of living in the time of COVID19. Yet, every customary action that we often took for granted in our religious expression is now just another reminder of the insecurity of our lives during a pandemic.
The Joy of the Gospel
As I called to mind the song, It’s a Good Day, I thanked two strangers for evangelizing my moment along the River Walk. Pope Francis’ wish for the Church in The Joy of the Gospel also came to mind as I walked on. “I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” (EG. 1)
The call to evangelization must be marked by the joy of the faithful messenger. Jesus told his disciples to go and make disciples of all nations. This call is not to just a few, or to those officially responsible for the life of the Church. The call to mission is comes to everyone who is baptized into Christ. Pope Paul VI, said, “Modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses.” (EN. 41) Pope Francis uses the words, joy and joyful 106 times in The Joy of the Gospel. During this time of pandemic, we need more than ever to become joyful witnesses to the Gospel.
The young woman’s witness to joy moved me in several ways. Simply shouting out, “Good morning” to a worker made me be aware of others on the River Walk. It made me address a homeless man with more warmth and to thank a worker cleaning a bathroom on the trail. Paying attention to the other is evangelization. I am grateful for a jogger reminding me, during this time of pandemic, that it is a good day…..

Ayer por la mañana, caminé por el Riverwalk en San Antonio. Había un trabajador de mantenimiento recogiendo basura en el camino. Una joven que corría hacia mí vio al trabajador y gritó: “Buenos días, Sr. Robert”. La saludó con la misma alegría. El saludo alegre y la respuesta me impresionaron y me sacaron de las estresantes reflexiones de los últimos meses. Estaba reflexionando con algo de nostalgia por los buenos días del pasado. Mientras continuaba, su alegría cambió mi caminar.
Pensé en una vieja canción de Perry Como, Es un buen día.
Oh, es un buen día, para cantar esta canción
y es un buen día, para seguir adelante
Sí, es un buen día, ¿cómo podría salir mal algo?
Es un buen día desde la mañana hasta la noche.
¿Cómo puede ser un “buen día” en tiempos de COVID19?
Hace seis meses fue el primer domingo que comenzamos a celebrar la misa sin una congregación presente. Los obispos animaron a las personas a santificar el Día del Señor de formas nuevas, personales y seguras. Vivimos misas retransmitidas que se dijeron en privado. Muchos de los que lucharon con la obligación del culto dominical, se sorprendieron al sentir una pérdida en sus vidas cuando no pudieron asistir a Misa. La novedad de asistir a Misa a través de la televisión llenó el vacío por un tiempo. Gradualmente, la misa se ofrece con participación limitada en la mayoría de las diócesis, pero la vida parroquial aún no ha vuelto a la normalidad. Usamos máscaras. La música es limitada. Somos conscientes de la reunión. Las celebraciones de sacramentos, matrimonios, fiestas y funerales se reducen drásticamente. Venimos a la iglesia en busca de alivio de los temores y frustraciones de vivir en la época de COVID19. Sin embargo, cada acción habitual que a menudo damos por sentada en nuestra expresión religiosa es ahora solo otro recordatorio de la inseguridad de nuestras vidas durante una pandemia.
El gozo del evangelio
Mientras recordaba la canción Es un buen día, agradecí a dos extraños por evangelizar mi momento a lo largo del Riverwalk. El deseo del Papa Francisco para la Iglesia en La alegría del Evangelio también me vino a la mente mientras caminaba. “En esta Exhortación quiero dirigirme a los fieles cristianos para invitarlos a una nueva etapa evangelizadora marcada por esa alegría, e indicar caminos para la marcha de la Iglesia en los próximos años”. (EG. 1)
La llamada a la evangelización debe estar marcada por la alegría del mensajero fiel. Jesús les dijo a sus discípulos que fueran y hicieran discípulos de todas las naciones. Este llamado no es solo para unos pocos, ni para los oficialmente responsables de la vida de la Iglesia. El llamado a la misión llega a todos los que son bautizados en Cristo. El Papa Pablo VI dijo: “El hombre moderno escucha más a los testigos que a los maestros, y si escucha a los maestros, es porque son testigos”. (EN. 41) El Papa Francisco usa las palabras, alegría y gozo 106 veces en La alegría del Evangelio. Durante este tiempo de pandemia, más que nunca necesitamos convertirnos en testigos gozosos del Evangelio.
El testimonio de alegría de la joven me conmovió de varias maneras. Simplemente gritar “Buenos días” a un trabajador me hizo alerto a los demás en el Riverwalk. Me hizo dirigirme a un vagabundo con más calidez y agradecer a un trabajador que limpiaba un baño en el camino. Prestar atención al otro es evangelización. Estoy agradecido por una corredora que me recuerda, durante este tiempo de pandemia, que es un buen día …
