La Fiesta de San Alfonso
Celebramos hoy la fiesta de San Alfonso Ligorio. San Alfonso es celebrado como el Doctor de la teología moral y Doctor de la teología de María. Nació en una familia noble de Nápoles, Italia y recibió la mejor educación de su tiempo. Era predicador celebrado como uno de los “illustrissimi”, (los más ilustres). Era músico, y compuso un canto navideño famoso de Italia, “Tu scendi dalle stelle”. Era fundador de la Congregación del Santísimo Redentor, los Redentoristas. La parroquia, San José, celebra la memoria de los Redentoristas que sirvieron aquí por más de cien años. Hoy, recordamos treinta años desde una iniciativa redentorista en el pastoral juvenil, Casa San Alfonso.
En marzo, el Papa Francisco dio un mensaje por la Ocasión del 150 Aniversario de la Proclamación de San Alfonso como Doctor de la Iglesia. Observó que, Alfonso fue formado en una mentalidad rigorista, era muy estricto. Tenía una conversión en su vida. Después de caminar con los marginados de la sociedad y de la iglesia, se convirtió a ser manso y humilde a través de conocer la realidad de los pobres. Alfonso dijo que los pobres eran sus mejores maestros en la vida de fe. Salió la ciudad de Nápoles, con sus universidades, centros de arte, ciencia y la sociedad noble para evangelizar a los campesinos que no tenían presencia de sacerdotes o religiosos. Fundó a los Redentoristas para proclamar el amor de Dios a los que no recibieron atención de la Iglesia.
En la “Alegría del Evangelio”, el Papa Francisco reflejó San Alfonso diciendo:
“quiero expresar con dolor que la peor discriminación que sufren los pobres es la falta de atención espiritual. La inmensa mayoría de los pobres tiene una especial apertura a la fe; necesitan a Dios y no podemos dejar de ofrecerles su amistad, su bendición, su Palabra, la celebración de los Sacramentos y la propuesta de un camino de crecimiento y de maduración en la fe. La opción preferencial por los pobres debe traducirse principalmente en una atención religiosa privilegiada y prioritaria.” (EG. 200)
En 1991, nosotros Redentoristas, consideramos la falta de atención espiritual a los jóvenes en todo el mundo, pero particularmente a los pobres que faltan recursos para suceder en la sociedad. Padre Patricio y yo tenía ganas de conocer mejor la realidad de jóvenes en los barrios de San José. Como San Alfonso, venimos de familias con los beneficios de estabilidad en la casa, oportunidad de tener buena educación y derechos civiles que jóvenes de San José no tenía. Sabemos de la vida del barrio, pero quisimos caminar con la juventud para conocer mejor la vida de los jóvenes.
En Casa San Alfonso, quisimos verdaderamente vivir lo que siempre decimos, “Nuestra casa es tu casa.” No supimos que los jóvenes van a sentir en casa con dos sacerdotes y un hermano. Invitamos a unos jóvenes vivir con nosotros, pero estábamos pensando que pueden entrar la Casa después de más preparación. Un día después de abrir la Casa, Julio vino con ropa y una bolsa de dormir para vivir en la casa. Después de dos días, tres hombres vivieron con nosotros. La Casa San Alfonso inició.
Durante la preparación para esta reunión, pedí a Noé Ruiz que importa Casa San Alfonso en su vida. Me encanta su respuesta. Dijo que en la Casa se sintió igual, respetado, honrado. Porque era su Casa, aceptó responsabilidad.
No solo fueron los jóvenes honrados por los Redentoristas. Le doy gracias a los jóvenes de la Casa que nos permitieron entrar sus vidas. La Casa cambió mi vida. Tengo muchas memorias de fiestas en la Casa, celebraciones de la Virgen, los Santos y cumpleaños de los jóvenes. Entré la lucha con gente viviendo en el peligro de indocumentación e inseguridad. Conozco éxito, alegría, tristeza, desesperación, esperanza y confianza en el amor de Dios. Preparé catequistas, universitarios, seminaristas en la pastoral a los migrantes aquí. Era Director de Ministerio Campesino en Fresno, CA, y cuando anunciaba que va a salir Fresno, los catequistas pidieron que escribo un libro sobre catequesis por los campesinos. El resulto fue el libro, La Fe del Migrante. Más de enseñar métodos de evangelización, honró la fe de los migrantes e inmigrantes que caminaron conmigo.
Ustedes me ayudaron a acompañar el fundador de los Redentoristas, San Alfonso Ligorio. La semana pasada leemos San Pablo animando los Efesios en la fe: “Sean siempre humildes y amables; sean comprensivos y sopórtense mutuamente con amor; esfuércense en mantenerse unidos en el Espíritu con el vínculo de la paz.” He experimentado esto en la comunidad mexicana desde que he caminado con los jóvenes de Casa San Alfonso.
Finalmente, a los niños y familias de los que estaban parte de la familia de Casa San Alfonso. La Casa solo existió por cinco años, pero era momento importante en la vida de fe de todos nosotros. Que Dios bendiga a ustedes experimentar la alegría, la amistad, la inquietud de caminar con Cristo y confianza en el amor de Dios y de la Iglesia en sus vidas.

Invitamos a todos que participaron en la vida de Casa San Alfonso, 1991 a 1996, a una misa en la Iglesia San José en Denver, el Primero de Agosto, a las 10:00 de la mañana. Padre Miguel McAndrew, C.Ss.R. va a celebrar la misa. Hay convivio después en el parque en frente de West High School. Que vengan jóvenes de la Casa San Alfonso, sus familias. Que vengan los padrinos de la Casa que eran esencial en la vida de la casa. Que vengan padres y familiares de los jóvenes de la Casa también.

The Feast of St. Alphonsus
Today, we celebrate the feast of St. Alphonsus Liguori. He is celebrated as the Doctor of Moral Theology and Doctor of Mariology. He was born into a noble family in Naples, Italy and received the best education of his time. He was celebrated as one of the “illustrissimi” (the most illustrious) preachers. He was a musician, and composed the famous Christmas song of Italy, “Tu scendi dalle stelle”. He founded of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, the Redemptorists. St. Joseph’s parish celebrates the memory of the Redemptorists who served here for over a hundred years. Today, we celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the founding of a Redemptorist initiative in youth ministry, Casa San Alfonso.
In March, Pope Francis delivered a message for the Occasion of the 150th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Saint Alphonsus as Doctor of the Church. He observed that Alphonsus was trained as a rigorist. He had a conversion after walking with the outcasts of society and the church, he became meek and humble as he learned about the reality of the poor. Alphonsus said that the poor were his best teachers in a life of faith. He left the city with its universities, centers of art, science and nobility to evangelize the rural poor who had no priests or religious presence. He founded the Redemptorists to proclaim the love of God to those who received little attention from the Church.
In the “Joy of the Gospel”, Pope Francis reflected Saint Alphonsus saying:
“I want to say, with regret, that the worst discrimination which the poor suffer is the lack of spiritual care. The great majority of the poor have a special openness to the faith; they need God, and we must not fail to offer them his friendship, his blessing, his word, the celebration of the sacraments and a journey of growth and maturity in the faith. Our preferential option for the poor must mainly translate into a privileged and preferential religious care.” (EG. 200)
In 1991, Redemptorists considered the lack of spiritual attention given to young people throughout the world, but particularly to the poor who lack resources to succeed in society. Father Patrick and I wanted to know better the reality of young people in the neighborhoods of St. Joseph. Like St. Alphonsus, we came from families with the benefits of stability at home, the opportunity to have a good education and civil rights that young people of St. Joseph did not have. We knew about the life of the neighborhood, but we wanted to walk with the youth to better understand the lives of the youth.
At Casa San Alfonso, we truly wanted to live what we often say, “Our house is your house.” We were uncertain if the young people would feel at home with two priests and a brother. We invited a few young people to live with us, but we were thinking that they can enter the Casa after more preparation. One day after opening the House, Julio came with clothes and a sleeping bag to live in the house. After two days, three men lived with us. The Casa San Alfonso started.
During the preparation for today´s reunion, I asked Noé Ruiz what Casa San Alfonso meant to him. He said that he felt like an equal. He felt respected and that Casa San Alfonso was his house. “Mi casa es tu casa,” was not just a saying. Because it was his House, he accepted responsibility.
It was not only the young people honored by Redemptorists walking with them. I thank the young people of the Casa for allowing me to enter their lives. Casa San Alfonso changed my life. I have many memories of parties at the Casa, celebrations of the Virgin, Saints and birthdays of the young people. Living with youth people living in the insecurity of poverty and deportation, I shared their successes, joys, sadness, despair, hope and trust in the love of God. I have taught catechists, university students, and seminarians about pastoral care for migrants and immigrants. I was Director of Farmer Worker Ministry in Fresno, CA. When I announced that I was going to leave Fresno, the catechists asked that I write a book on catechesis for the campesinos. The result was the book, La Fe del Migrante. More than teaching methods of evangelization, I wrote to honor the faith of the migrants and immigrants with whom I have who walked.
You helped me to accompany the founder of the Redemptorists, Saint Alphonsus Liguori. Last week we read Saint Paul encouraging the Ephesians in faith: “Always be humble and kind; be understanding and support each other with love; strive to stay united in the Spirit with the bond of peace.” I have experienced this in the Mexican community since I have walked with the youth of Casa San Alfonso.
Finally, for the children and families of those who were part of the Casa San Alfonso family. Casa San Alfonso only existed for five years, but it was an important moment in the faith lives of all of us. May God bless you to experience the joy, friendship, the desire to walk with Christ and to trust in the love of God and our Church.

We invite all who participated in the life of Casa San Alfonso, 1991 to 1996, to a mass at St. Joeseph’s Church in Denver, on August 1st, at 10:00 am. Father Mike McAndrew, C.Ss.R. will celebrate the mass. There is a potluck picnic afterwards in the park in front of West High School. Come, all who were part of our Casa San Alfonso Community. Come, Jóvenes and their families. Come padrinos and amigos de la Casa. And come, parents and relatives of the Casa San Alfonso community.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
