Kermés – Festival Parroquial
Antes de mudarme a Denver en 1991, experimenté festivales parroquiales en parroquias no hispanas. Fueron grandes eventos que necesitaron un año completo de preparación. Agotaron las energías de los voluntarios y solo se realizaron una vez al año. En las comunidades hispanas, pueden tener lugar varias veces al año y se basan en las necesidades de la comunidad. Puede ser que la iglesia necesite un nuevo techo, “Tienes una kermés para obtener los fondos necesarios” La parroquia de St. José realizaba una kermés cada año para obtener fondos para un orfanato en México, otras veces, una kermés era para obtener fondos para una necesidad parroquial.
Estos eventos están llenos de colores, música, baile y comida. Los mejores tacos, menudo y pozole de este lado de la frontera atraen a gente de toda la ciudad. Estos eventos son lo más destacado de cada verano, desde que comencé a trabajar en el ministerio hispano. El verano antes de iniciar Casa San Alfonso, fue una kermés que ayudó a anunciar el próximo establecimiento de la casa de jóvenes.
Ayer, en Kansas City, la parroquia del Sagrado Corazón – Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe celebró una kermés. Los olores, la música, los bailarines, la horchata y la agua de jamaica me recordaron mis primeros días en Denver. La imagen de arriba es de la kermés de ayer. Había puestos de venta de hamburguesas y hotdogs, y me los ofrecían, pero yo dije que no venía a una kermés a comer hamburguesas. Los sopes y el pozole eran mucho más atractivos. Alguien me ofreció una cerveza, pero el agua de melón era más refrescante en una tarde calurosa. Si hay una kermés en una parroquia cercana a ti, trae tu apetito y disfruta de los colores, el baile, la música y la comunidad.
Kermés – Parish Festival
Before moving to Denver in 1991, I experienced parish festivals in non-Hispanic parishes. They were grand events that needed a full year of preparation. They exhausted the energies of the volunteers and they were only held once each year. In Hispanic communities, they may take place several times in the year and they are based on needs in the community. It may be that the church needs a new roof, “Have a kermes to gain funds needed.” St. Joseph’s parish held a kermés each year to gain funds for an orphanage in Mexico. At other times, a kermés is to gain funds for a parish need.
These events are filled with colors, music, dance, and food. The best tacos, menudo and pozole this side of the border draw people from all over town. These events are a highlight of every summer, since I began working in Hispanic ministry. The summer before we initiated Casa San Alfonso, it was a kermés that helped announce the coming establishment of the youth house.
Yesterday, in Kansas City, the parish of Sacred Heart – Our Lady of Guadalupe held a kermés. The smells, the music, the dancers, the horchata and jamaica (hibiscus water) reminded me of my first days in Denver. The picture above is from yesterday’s kermés. There were booths selling hamburgers and hot dogs, and they offered them to me, but I said that I didn’t come to a kermés to eat burgers. The sopes and the pozole were much more enticing. Someone offered me a beer, but the agua de melón was more refreshing on a hot afternoon. If there is a kermés in a parish near you, bring your appetite and enjoy the colors, the dance, the music and the community.
Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
