¿Por qué tan negativo?
Hay muchas cosas mal a nuestro alrededor. Hay demasiada violencia. Hay demasiadas malas noticias que se nos presentan todos los días. Cuando doy un paseo, veo demasiada basura alrededor, hay baches en el pavimento, el arroyo está contaminado. Saludo a la gente, algunos responden, muchos simplemente pasan de largo. Mis equipos favoritos de béisbol están en el sótano. La política, caray, no es bueno cuando la gente no puede hablar cortésmente entre sí. E incluso en la Iglesia, viejos escándalos e incluso algunos nuevos hacen que sea difícil sentirse bien acerca de ser sacerdote. Escasez de sacerdotes, divisiones, número decreciente de personas que participan o afirman que son católicos.
Uno puede encontrar muchas razones para ser negativo. Sin embargo, todavía estamos en nuestro tiempo litúrgico de Pascua. El domingo celebramos la venida del Espíritu Santo. Pero, preparémonos para aceptar el Espíritu Santo. Cuando Jesús comenzó su ministerio, leyó del profeta Isaías: “El Espíritu del Señor está sobre mí. El me ha ungido para traer Buenas Nuevas a los pobres, para anunciar a los cautivos su libertad y a los ciegos que pronto van a ver. A despedir libres a los oprimidos”. (Lc 4, 18) Anunció la Buena Nueva a los Apóstoles, pero aun viendo el bien que hacía y que él proclamó, los Apóstoles dudaron.
Los Apóstoles siguieron a Jesús. Vieron sus acciones, escucharon sus enseñanzas, vieron cosas maravillosas. El ciego vio, el sordo oyó, el cojo caminó, el leproso fue sanado, el pecador perdonado, la mujer se divorció cinco veces diciendo que sabía todo de ella, y hasta los muertos resucitaron. Vieron el horror de su pasión y muerte en la cruz. Lo vieron vivo y con ellos hasta la Ascensión. Y después de haber presenciado tanto, antes de ascender está escrito que todavía dudaban.
Después de recibir el Espíritu Santo, los Apóstoles descubrieron su misión. Salieron a contarles a todos la Buena Noticia de Jesús. No había más tiempo que perder viendo solo la tristeza del mundo que nos rodeaba. Necesitábamos decir la verdad y llevar el mensaje hasta los confines del mundo. Notemos y veamos lo bueno que nos rodea.

Why so negative?
There are many things wrong around us. There is too much violence. There is too much bad news presented to us every day. When I take a walk, I see too much garbage around. There are cracks in the pavement, the creek is polluted. I greet people, some respond, many just pass on by. My favorite baseball teams are in the cellar. Politics, well it is not good when people cannot talk civilly with each other. And even in the Church, old scandals and even a few new ones make it difficult to feel good about being a priest. Priest shortages, divisions, declining numbers of people participating or even claiming to be Catholic.
One may find many reasons to be negative. Yet, we are still in our liturgical season of Easter. On Sunday, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit. But let’s get ready to accept the Holy Spirit. When Jesus began his ministry, he read from the prophet Isaiah: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free.” (Lk 4: 18) He proclaimed Good News to the Apostles, but even in seeing the good that he did and that he proclaimed, the Apostles doubted.
The Apostles followed Jesus. They saw his actions, the heard his teaching, they saw amazing things taking place. The blind saw, the deaf heard, the lame walked, the leper cleansed, the sinner forgiven, the woman divorced five times saying that he knew everything about her, and even the dead rose. They saw the horror of his passion and death on the cross. They saw him alive and with them until the Ascension. And after they witnessed so much, before he ascended it is written that they still doubted.
After receiving the Holy Spirit, the Apostles discovered their mission. They went out to tell everyone the Good News of Jesus. There was no more time to waste seeing only the sadness of the world around us. We needed to speak the truth and carry the message to the ends of the world. Let us notice and see the good around us.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
