Remembering Fr. Joe Tobin, C.Ss.R.

The following is our remembrance of a Redemptorist who worked for justice for immigrants, especially farmworkers.)

Remembering Fr. Joe Tobin, C.Ss.R.

May 22, 2003

Rev. Joseph Tobin died at the age of 68 while stationed at St. Mary of the Assumption Parish, Whittier, CA. Born in Fort Fairfield, ME, May 7, 1935; professed at Mount St. Clement College, DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1957′ ordained July 2, 1962.

He was a man who hungered for social justice. He worked with Caesar Chavez and the migrant rights movement throughout Arizona and California and always seemed to be on a picket line supporting the poor against the unjust practices of local government or the Church. He served in the parishes in the West as a priest and missionary preacher. The last years of his life he spent in Whittier where he died quietly while resting in his chair. The church was overflowing both at the wake and Funeral Mass. He had touched so many hearts in his quest for peace and justice.

45 years professed; 40 years ordained.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
