Día de Gracias
Agradecido por el día
Cuando estaba en la universidad, era parte de la Sociedad de San Vicente de Paulo. Hubo dos lecciones que atesoro de esos días. El hermano Mateo enseñó un gran respeto por los pobres. Es tentador criticar a los pobres cuando algunos han tomado malas decisiones en sus vidas. Algunos dudan de la honestidad o de las necesidades de los pobres. Dijo: “En caso de duda, entréguelo”. Nuestro ministerio es ayudar a la persona necesitada. Nuestro ministerio no es juzgar sino dar gratuitamente de lo que tenemos.
Recuerdo que un día nos dijo que estaba a punto de llamarnos y decirnos que el banco de alimentos estaba vacío y que no viniera esa noche. Cuando empezó a llamar al capitán de nuestro equipo para esa noche, sonó el timbre y había un camión grande en el estacionamiento de la iglesia, y el conductor le dijo que un supermercado local tenía productos para donar al banco de alimentos. Nuestro equipo entregó comida no solo a todos en nuestra lista para el día, sino que también llevó comida a varias familias que sabíamos que necesitarían ayuda.
El otro recuerdo fue el de ir a casa de Berta. Su marido quedó paralítico a causa de un accidente laboral y tuvieron ocho hijos, seis de los cuales todavía estaban en casa. Hacía unos meses que no pedía ayuda. Llamó al hermano Mateo ese día y preguntó si los voluntarios de Vicente de Paulo podrían verla esa noche. Cuando entramos por la puerta, dijo: “No pedí ayuda, pero quería contarles la buena noticia. Un nuevo programa del presidente Johnson hizo posible comprar una casa”. Ella dijo que era una respuesta a la oración.
Le preguntamos cómo oraba. Ella dijo: “Cada mañana, me arrodillo y le pido a mi Señor que me ayude a hacer su voluntad ese día. Y cada noche, le agradezco por bendecir a mi familia ese día”. Si bien muchas veces veíamos su pobreza, el cuidado de su esposo y de sus hijos como una carga que soportar, lo único que ella podía hacer era dar gracias al Señor que estaba con ella durante todo el día.

Grateful for the Day
When I was in college, I was part of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. There were two lessons that I cherish from those days. Brother Matthew taught great respect for the poor. It is tempting to criticize the poor when some have made poor choices in their lives. Some doubt the honesty or the needs of the poor. He said, “When in doubt, give it out.” Our ministry is to help the person in need. Our ministry is not to judge but to give freely of what we have.
I remember one day, he told us that he was about to call us and say that the food bank was empty and to not come that evening. As he began to call the captain of our crew for that evening, the doorbell rang and there was a large truck in the church parking lot, and the driver told him that a local supermarket had goods to donate to the food bank. Our crew delivered food to not only all on our list for the day, but took food to several more families who we knew could use help.
The other memory was of going to the home of Bertha. Her husband was paralyzed from a work accident and they had eight children, six were still at home. She had not asked for help for a few months. She called Brother Matthew that day and asked if Vincent de Paul volunteers could see her that evening. When we walked in the door, she said, “I did not call for help, but I wanted to tell you the good news. A new program of President Johnson made it possible for her and her husband to purchase a home.” She said that it was an answer to prayer.
We asked her how she prayed. She said, “Every morning, I kneel and ask my Lord to help me do his will that day. And each evening, I thank him for blessing my family that day.” While we often saw her poverty, taking care of her husband and caring for her children as a burden to bear, all she could do is give thanks to the Lord being with her through the day.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
