No time for Sourpusses

As we enter Lent, consider Pope Francis’ concern that we have too many “sourpusses” in our Church. One of the more serious temptations which stifles boldness and zeal is a defeatism which turns us into querulous and disillusioned pessimists, “sourpusses”. (EG 85) Fasting, sacrifice, penance and prayer are well established practices of Lent. They are part of our humble response to God. We remember our unworthiness of God’s love and mercy.

The liturgy for Ash Wednesday reminds us that the real sign of sacrifice in our lives arises from our hearts, not our outward actions. The first reading: “Rend your hearts, not your garments,” calls us to internal renewal. The gospel acclamation says: “If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.” Our fasting, sacrifice, penance and prayer opens us to hear God’s voice.

“When you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you may not appear to be fasting, except to your Father who is hidden.” As long as I have celebrated Masses for Ash Wednesday, after hearing the words of Jesus in the Gospel, placing ashes on our foreheads appears out of place. Jesus clearly wanted conversion of the heart, not simply an appearance of conversion.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
