Nunca abandones a los pobres
El Papa Francisco afirma: “Existe un vínculo inseparable entre nuestra fe y los pobres. Nunca los dejemos solos”. (EG. 48) Cuando consideramos la generosidad de las personas que responden a las crisis y ofrecen asistencia a través de Caridades Católicas y Servicios de Ayuda Católica, nuestra Iglesia se preocupa por los pobres. Tal cuidado es parte de nuestro orgullo en la fe católica. Que siempre sigamos respondiendo a las grandes crisis del mundo y de nuestras comunidades.
Sin embargo, hay más en nuestro vínculo con los pobres que nuestro cuidado social y físico por los pobres. Nuestro vínculo con los pobres necesita que seamos testigos de la enseñanza de Jesús con y para los pobres. Mi caminar con los campesinos migrantes es más significativo cuando no estoy brindando comida, refugio y consuelo a los pobres. Hay algunos que malinterpretan mi preocupación por llevar la gracia del sacramento a los pobres. Piensan que no estoy poniendo suficiente atención a la desesperación y la injusticia experimentada por los pobres.
En el evangelio de Juan, cuando Jesús reconoció el hambre de la multitud, les dijo a los Apóstoles que repartieran los panes y los peces a la multitud. Después de que la multitud hubo comido, les enseñó el significado de la Eucaristía, cuando comerían su carne y beberían su sangre. Evangelización sigue atención al hambre de la gente.
Al comenzar mi trabajo con la Red Católica de Campesinos Migrantes (CMFN), sé que caminaré en los campos con los trabajadores, alentando a los trabajadores y a los agricultores a abordar las necesidades de los trabajadores, pero, sobre todo, espero con ansias enseñar a voluntarios, catequistas, migrantes e inmigrantes de las alegrías de nuestra fe católica.
A todas las personas de fe, nunca abandonen a los pobres. Que Dios los bendiga al ofrecer tiempo, talento y tesoro al cuidado de los pobres. A los líderes religiosos, que Dios los bendiga con paciencia, comprensión y misericordia al acoger a los pobres en la alegría del Evangelio y en la gracia de los sacramentos.

Never abandon the poor
Pope Francis states: “There is an inseparable bond between our faith and the poor. May we never abandon them.” (EG. 48) When we consider the generosity of people responding to crisis and offering assistance through Catholic Charities and Catholic Relief Services, our Church cares for the poor. Such care is part our pride in our Catholic faith. May we always continue to respond to the great crises of the world and in our communities.
Yet, there is more to our bond with the poor than our social and physical care for the poor. Our bond with the poor needs us to witness the teaching of Jesus with and for the poor. My walking with migrant farmworkers is most meaningful when I am not providing food, shelter and comfort for the poor. There are some people who misunderstand my concern about bringing the grace of sacrament to the poor. They believe that I am not attentive enough to the desperation and injustices that the poor experience.
In the gospel of John, when Jesus recognized the hunger of the crowd, he told the Apostles to share the loaves and the fish to the crowd. After the crowd had eaten, he taught them the meaning of Eucharist, when they would eat his flesh and drink his blood. Evangelization follows attending to the hunger of the people.
As I begin my work with the Catholic Migrant Farmworker Network (CMFN), I know that I will be walking in the fields with workers, encouraging the workers and the growers in addressing the needs of workers, but most of all, I look forward to teaching volunteers, catechists, migrants and immigrants of the joys of our Catholic faith.
To all people of faith, never abandon the poor. May God bless you in offering time, talent and treasure to the care of the poor. To religious leaders, may God bless you with patience, understanding and mercy as you welcome the poor to the joy of the Gospel and to the grace of sacraments.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
